6 Sample distillation
To obtain the distilled with the maximum content of alcohol or volatile substances and
to get a good performance, the following working routine must be followed. Once the
distilled is obtained, the alcohol degree must be measured (see chapters 11 and 12).
6.1 Check the level of external water tank
Refill the water tank with distilled water stabilized with 5 mg/l Sodium Chloride to get
a minimum conductivity of 20 microSiemens.cm (see 4.4).
6.2 Unit warm-up
To assure that the unit gives maximum efficiency on the distillation, a warm-up step
must be run previous sample distillation batch. To do it, just insert a distillation tube
(any) with 25ml (aprox) of water and collect the distiller during 5 minutes (use an
Erlenmeyer flask as collector).
Run this warm-up step after 1h of inactivity.
6.3 Choose the properly distillation tube
The distillation tube must be properly chosen to avoid the rectifier contamination and
to get an optimal energy transfer to sample.
Use the following guide to choose the distillation tube:
- Tube Ø42 for samples of volatile acidity.
- Tube Ø52 for samples of volatile acidity.
- Tube Ø52 for samples of 100ml for alcohol degree.
- Tube Ø80 for samples of 200ml for alcohol degree.
Collector flasks.
- 200ml graduated flask to collect distilled for alcohol contend.
- 250ml Erlenmeyer flask to collect distilled for volatile acidity.
6.4 Distillation
Please follow this steps: (on the same order) (see also chapter 11 for accurated details)
• Visually check that the solenoid cooler is completely empty from rests of previous
sample. If necessary, remove it on a separate flask by pushing «ADD» key.
• Add near 10ml of distilled water on the collector flask. This is to avoid the loss of
alcohol on the first condensed drops.
• Place the collector flask on the flask holder. The flask wall must be in contact with
the sensor face. The end of the tube from the cooler must be immersed under the
level of the 10 ml of water.
• Place the sample on the distillation tube and insert it on the DE-1626.
• Push «START» key.
• When the level of distilled obtained reaches the sensor face, the unit will stops
distillation automatically.
• First of all, remove the distillation tube.
• Add distilled drops by pushing «ADD» key until levelling the collector flask.
