eld strength is extremely large, the
ERASE may be compromised which will
cause the ERASE indicator on the LCD to
blink. If the ERASE indicator is blinking,
redo the ERASE.
SMART +
(ST102 Model Only)
When a buried ferrous object is oriented
vertically to the Earth's surface, a magne-
tization is induced into the object by the
Earth's magnetic eld. In the Northern
Hemisphere the magnetic eld induced at
the top of the object is North "+" polarity
and in the Southern Hemisphere the mag-
netic eld induced at the top of the object
is South "-" polarity.
FIELD OPERATION
The optimum orientation of the locator
when searching for an object is a 45°
angle referenced to the Earth's surface.
Maintain a constant height above the
ground with the tip of the locator and
slowly move the locator from side to side.
VOL
SENS
VOL
After locating the object, position the
SENS
VOL
locator in a vertical orientation and move it
back and forth in an "X" pattern to pinpoint
the object while observing the audio output
and/or the output on the LCD 2c.
The output will be maximum when directly
over a vertical object or at the ends of a
horizontal object.

SMART
In the Northern Hemisphere, select
SMART + to only detect objects with a
North "+" polarity. This should be useful in
searching for surveying stakes, pins, and
even objects near chain link fences.
In the Southern Hemisphere, select
SMART - to only detect objects with a
South "-" polarity. This should be useful in
searching for surveying stakes, pins, and
even objects near chain link fences.
Note: The SMART + and SMART -
modes of operation are only useful for
searching for ferrous objects buried
vertically to the Earth's surface (such as
surveying stakes, property pins, etc.)
