Incremental magnetic encoder system
Installation and connection (continued)
Assembling the sensor head
The sensor head housing has bore holes with M4 threads.
Using screws, the sensor head can be connected two
different ways to the machine part: using either the M4
thread in the sensor head or the M3 thread in the machine
part.
– Installation examples are available in the
user's guide.
– To ensure safe operation, always position the
sensor head above the tape and within the
measurement range.
– To ensure correct operation while maintaining
the specified system accuracy, the tape
length must be greater than the required
measurement length, and the sensor head
must be correctly positioned in relation to the
tape.
Assembling the magnetic tape
NOTICE
Damage to the magnetic tape
Hard tools may cause damage to the magnetic surface
of the tape. Even damage that appears slight (e.g.
scratches, dents) can affect the function and linearity.
► Do not use hard tools to install the magnetic tape!
► Replace damaged magnetic tapes!
A complete description and installation
instructions for magnetic tapes can be found
online in the magnetic tape user's guide at
www.balluff.com.
Shielding and cable routing
Defined ground!
The linear encoder system and the control
cabinet must be at the same ground potential.
The cable must be routed tension-free.
To ensure electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), observe
the following:
The cable shield must be grounded on the controller
side, i.e. connected to the protective earth conductor.
When ducting the cable between the sensor, controller,
and power supply, it is important to avoid going near
high voltage cables due to interferences.
Magnetic fields
The position measuring system is a magnetically coded
system. It is important to maintain adequate distance
between the position measuring system and strong,
external magnetic fields.

Bending radius
Fixed routing
KA_ _ ≥ 7,5 × D
KF_ _ ≥ 5 × D
KD_ _ ≥ 3 × D
Cable length
Cable length max. 20 m. Longer cables may be used if
their construction, shielding and routing prevent noise
interference.
Observe voltage drop in cable!
The nominal voltage on the BML must not be
undercut. Each wire in the cable has a
resistance of 0.2 Ohm/m. When calculating the
drop in voltage, account for the feed and return
lines, i.e. the total resistance is 0.4 Ohm/m.
Startup
DANGER
Uncontrolled system movement
When starting up, if the linear encoder system is part of a
closed loop system whose parameters have not yet been
set, the system may perform uncontrolled movements.
This could result in personal injury and equipment
damage.
► Persons must keep away from the system's
hazardous zones.
► Startup must be performed only by trained technical
personnel.
► Observe the safety instructions of the equipment or
system manufacturer.
1. Check connections for tightness and correct polarity.
Replace damaged connections or devices.
2. Turn on the system.
3. Check measured values in the controller and reset if
necessary.
Operating notes
Check and record the function of the linear encoder
system and all associated components on a regular
basis.
If malfunctions are found in the linear encoder system,
remove it from service and protect against
unauthorized use.
To prevent errors when determining positions, do not
exceed the maximum traverse rate.
Flexible routing
KA_ _ ≥ 15 × D
KF_ _ ≥ 15 × D
KD_ _ ≥ 7 × D
