Preparation
You will need two additional top acorn nuts and two spring preload
nuts (kit WW 16-220). You cannot use the original Softail parts, as
these are for 3/8"-16 threads and the new shock absorbers have
1/2"-20 thread.
While working on the bike, place it on a lift, secure it by straps and
remove the ground wire from the battery.
It is easiest to install the shock absorber kit if the fork is on a
workbench. If you do not want to take off the handlebar, cables and
wiring harness, at least take out the front wheel and fender and
remove the headlight.
Remove the single shock absorber, springs, spring seats and spring
rods completely. If in doubt, refer to the service manual.
Installation
Place the rebound (top) springs on the new shock aborbers. Secure
springs in place with preload nuts from WW 16-220 kit. Counter with
top nut.
Place one O-ring on each shock absorber and insert them in the
spring support on the rigid fork.
Push on the second O-ring and the cup washer from the underside
and screw on the 3/4"-16 nut. 2 threads of the shock absorber thread
(1/8" = 3,1 mm) must be visible.

PARTS IN ORANGE ARE NO LONGER NEEDED
Screw on two 7/16"-20 nuts per rod until you have
1-9/16" (40 mm) of free thread. Counter both nuts
on each absorber rod.
Place two spring seat halves on each rod beneath
the 3/4" nuts and slide on one inner spring on
each rod.
Slide on the lockwasher und screw on the exten-
sion. Stick a #2 Philips screw driver through the
hole and tighten the extensions against the 7/16"
nuts and lockwasher. Thereby hold the 7/16" nuts
by a flat 11/16" open wrench that you stick through the coil windings.
Decide which side of the threaded stud you are going to use for
securing the shock absorbers in the spring fork. The long thread will
accept the longer acorn nuts that held the sping rod formerly, the
short thread will go with the old top nuts. Then screw the stud into
the extension piece.
If the extension piece is hard to screw on, unscrew and check inter-
nal threads. Re-cut 7/16"-20 thread if necessary.
Slide the lower outer springs on the shock absorber assemblies re-
spectively and place both studs in the spring fork holes respectively.
Stick the #2 Philips screw driver through the extension and screw on
the acorn nut you decided to go with.
