WELDING INSTRUCTION
WARNING! WELDING OPERATION SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT
BY A TRAINED WELDER.
A. ELECTRODES
Electrodes or wire must be for use with non-alloy or low-alloy steel. Electrodes
must not be wet. When using wire, this must not be rusty.
Following types are recommended:
ISO 2560, DIN EN 499, BS EN 499, AWS A 5.1 E 7018 or equal.
B. POSITIONING
Since these are universal hooks, they can be welded on to different
supporting materials (e.g. girder).
If the hook is welded on to a bucket it should be placed so that
1. it will withstand all strains caused by different positions of the bucket
2. any damage to the coupling element which might be caused by the other parts
of the excavator is avoided
3. the user will not be injured (pinched or cut)
4. any unintentional unhooking of the coupling element will be made impossible
5. the coupling element can be easily hooked and unhooked
6. it doesn´t hamper excavation and lifting
The hook should be placed in the middle at the upper part of the bucket. The place
should be protected, but also easy to reach. Figure shows two different positions.
Before use a competent person shall certify that the hook may be taken into work.
Take also into consideration the tensile strength of the supporting material
Following table indicates minimum thickness of plate for bmax and hmax.

C. WELDING
Before welding, the surfaces must be cleaned thoroughly from rust, paint or similar.
NOTE! At temperatures below 0°C the welding surfaces should be preheated.
Positioning of the hook should be done by spot welding in each corner. Then the bottom
joint is to be welded, which must be carried out continuosly (well filled all around).
Welding torch or electrode should be held at 45° (see figure), to obtain required pene-
tration. When the top joint is to be welded, a larger electrode might be choosen.
Minimum value of throat thickness, A, (see table) must be reached. Cracks or pores are
not permitted.
NOTE! The joint must NOT be cooled by water. Just non-forced air cooling, is allowed.
The pin (axle) should be lubricated when the hook has reached room temperature.
WLP: Complete welding of the ends of the bow.

F. REPAIRS
Only spare parts from the manufacturer is allowed. Welding, except the welding
which is mentioned at the previous page, is not allowed without written permission
from GUNNEBO INDUSTRIER AB.
Surface treatment in the form of electric or hot-dip galvanizing is strictly prohibited.
G. LOADING
Lifting or lowering of loads must be done smoothly and free from jerks. The load
must never be applied directly on the latch or the hook tip. The load should be applied in
sector 80° or sector 1 (see figures). Side loading is not permitted. When lifting, the load
should be placed on the bowl of the hook, with the latch in a closed position.
WARNING! If the latch has slipped over its position the working load limit has been
exceeded.

H. INSPECTION AND CONTROL
Inspect the components periodically and look for:
bent, nicked worn or elongated components
severe corrosion
scoring of cracks
that rivet joint and springs are correct
IF ANY COMPONENTS SHOWS FAULTS FROM THE ABOVE
INSPECTlON, THE HOOK MUST IMMEDlATELY BE REMOVED
FROM SERVlCE.
