Trailer Breakaway Swich
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
This breakaway switch is designed to activate the trailer's electric
brakes in the event that the trailer should disconnect while under
tow, bringing the trailer to a safe stop. Breakaway systems are
required when towing trailers rated at 3,000 lbs. GVW or higher.
Note: Your trailer must be equipped with electric trailer
brakes to utilize this switch.
MOUNTING
1. Read instructions thoroughly before beginning.
2. Position the breakaway switch on the tongue of the trailer in a
position that allows the cable to reach the tow vehicle's hitch
safety chain eyelets. The switch must be mounted with the pin and
wires facing the rear of the trailer and the cable facing the tow
vehicle (Fig 1).
Caution: The switch location
must allow for an
unobstructed line of pull
should the trailer and
vehicle separate.
3. Drill a 9/32" hole in the
trailer frame, using the switch as
a template. Mount the breakaway switch to the trailer
using a 1/4" bolt and nylon locking nut (not provided).
Note: Do not over-tighten the bolt as the switch must be
allowed to pivot.
Caution: Ensure that the area directly behind the
