Important Safety Instructions
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
This manual contains instructions and warnings that should be followed during the installation, operation and storage of this product. Failure to heed these
warnings will void your warranty and may lead to equipment damage, personal injury or death.
WARNING!
The included mounting shelves are not intended to support more than one battery pack. Do not attempt to stack multiple battery packs on a
single set of mounting shelves. Do not attempt to install the battery pack in a 2-post rack. Failure to follow these warnings will create a risk
of equipment damage and personal injury.
DANGER! LETHAL HIGH VOLTAGE HAZARD!
Potentially lethal high voltage exists within the battery pack, even when it is not connected to a UPS system. Internal battery removal/
replacement should be performed by qualified electricians or service personnel only, following all the precautions listed in this manual and
adhering to local electrical codes.
Location Warnings
• Install the battery pack indoors, away from excess moisture, humidity, temperature extremes, conductive contaminants, dust and direct sunlight.
• For best performance, keep the indoor temperature between 32º F and 104º F (0º C and 40º C).
• Leave adequate space around all sides of the battery pack for proper ventilation.
Installation Warnings
• Use caution when attempting to move or lift the battery pack. Because of the weight of the battery pack, two or more people should assist each other in lifting
and installing it.
• The weight of the 4U external battery pack requires the internal batteries to be removed before installing the battery pack in a 4-post rack or rack enclosure.
Read all installation instructions and warnings fully before proceeding with installation.
• The 4U battery pack is too heavy for 2-post rack installation. Do not attempt to install the 4U battery pack in a 2-post rack.
• The 4U battery pack should be mounted as low in the rack or rack enclosure as possible.
• Do not attempt to stack the 4U battery pack on top of the UPS power module.
• Suggested installation procedures apply to mounting the battery pack in common rack and rack enclosure types and may not be appropriate for all rack
configurations. The installer must determine the fitness of hardware and procedures before installation.
UPS Connection Warnings
• Confirm that the battery pack and UPS system use the same DC voltage before connecting them together.
• Do not attempt to modify the battery connectors or cables, and do not attempt to use adapters of any kind.
• Do not connect or disconnect an external battery pack while the UPS system is operating on battery power, due to the possibility of dangerous arcing.
• When connecting multiple battery packs to a single UPS system, the battery packs should be approximately the same age, with the same level of wear.
• Small sparks may be produced when connecting or disconnecting external battery packs. This is normal.
• Always use the connector retention brackets to secure the battery pack connection. Do not attempt to operate the UPS system without the connector retention brackets.
Equipment Connection Warnings
• Use of this equipment in life support applications where failure of this equipment can reasonably be expected to cause the failure of the life support equipment
or to significantly affect its safety or effectiveness is not recommended. Do not use this equipment in the presence of a flammable anesthetic mixture with air,
oxygen or nitrous oxide.
Battery Warnings
• The battery pack does not require routine maintenance. There are no user-serviceable parts inside.
• Due to the risk of injury from contact with potentially lethal high voltage, battery removal/replacement must be performed by qualified electricians or service
personnel.
• Observe proper precautions during battery removal/replacement. Unplug the battery pack from the UPS system before removing/replacing batteries. Do not
short or bridge battery terminals with any object. Use tools with insulated handles. Remove metal objects such as watches and rings before working with
batteries. Do not open batteries or remove plastic battery sleeves. Replace batteries only with sealed lead-acid batteries of the same number, type, voltage and
amp-hour capacity.
• The batteries are recyclable. Do not dispose of the batteries in a fire. Refer to local codes for disposal requirements, or in the USA only, refer to these sources
for recycling information: 800-SAV-LEAD (800-728-5323), 800-8-BATTERY (800-822-8837) or www.rbrc.com.
