1. Refer to all instructions provided with the pump and cylinder. Read, understand and keep these instructions for
reference to all pump and cylinder safety precautions, operation, and maintenance.
2. Raise or lower the bolster as needed for the work piece to be pressed:
A. Put a small amount of tension on the cable by cranking the winch up to take weight off the support pins at the
end of the bolster adjacent to the winch. Remove the loose support pins out of the bolster.
B. Raise the other end of the bolster by pulling slightly on the handle grip until the two remaining support pins can be
removed. Remove the support pins.
C. Crank the winch for up or down to position the work bed. Install all four support pins in the bolsters and through
the uprights completely so the spring pin in the support pin touches the bolster.
3. Align the work pieces on the work bed and wrap with a protective blanket if possible.
4. For the 1857 press: Turn the pump valve knob clockwise (CW) to a CLOSED position. Note: Hand tight only! Pump
the pump handle up and down to build pressure and begin moving the cylinder rod out of the cylinder. As the cylinder
rod approaches the work piece, stop and move the cylinder on the bolster as needed to ensure perfect alignment
with the work piece.
Continue to pump the pump handle and make contact with the work piece. If alignment is good and there's no sign
the components are off-center, continue pumping until the press job is complete.
To release the pressure, open the valve slowly by turning the valve knob counterclockwise (CCW) to control the load.
For the 1858 press: Move the pump valve control knob to ADVANCE to begin moving the cylinder rod out of the
cylinder. As the cylinder rod approaches the work piece, move the pump valve knob to HOLD. Move the cylinder on
the bolster as needed to ensure perfect alignment with the work piece.
ADVANCE the cylinder rod to make contact with the work piece. If alignment is good and there's no sign the components
are off-center, continue advancing the cylinder until the press job is complete.
To release the pressure, move the valve control knob to RETURN.
For the 1858-1P press: Press the ADVANCE remote control button to begin moving the cylinder rod out of the
cylinder. As the cylinder rod approaches the work piece, stop and move the cylinder on the bolster as needed to
ensure perfect alignment with the work piece.
ADVANCE the cylinder rod to make contact with the work piece. If alignment is good and there's no sign the components
are off-center, continue advancing the cylinder until the press job is complete.
To release the pressure, press the RELEASE button on the remote control.
1. Before each use, inspect the press for any damage such as cracked welds or elongated holes. If any damage is
found, discontinue use.
2. Every three months, inspect the entire length of the lifting cables and replace cables that appear frayed, worn, or
crushed. The cables must run on the pulleys smoothly and easily, and the pulleys must turn freely. Regular cable
inspections and maintenance must be done to help prevent accidental cable breakage.
3. Refer to the instructions provided with the pump and cylinder for detailed maintenance schedules for these components.
4. Use only the replacement parts called out in the parts lists in this document. Items found in the parts lists have been
carefully tested and selected by OTC.
