If necessary, remove any scale also from the collector tubes, the suction and delivery unit and the
•
flexible tubes, using the cleaning brushes available on the market.
Each time maintenance is carried out, the impeller and its holder, the priming chamber and the
•
various water passages should be cleaned.
Turn the head of the filter and unscrew the lid of the motor as indicated in figure 23. Take out the
•
rotor from the holder (fig.24) and clean it, using a brush if necessary.
N.B.: do not use solvents or detergents of any kind, only warm water.
•
Re-assemble the pieces by carrying out the operations described in reverse, taking care to dry the
•
electrical cable and plug if wet.
Re-position the filter as described in the paragraph "INSTALLATION", connect the taps and open
•
the levers, shifting them to the vertical position (first OUT then IN); check the connectors are
tightened properly and prime the filter as described in the paragraph "STARTING THE FILTER".
Advice for choosing filtering materials
No-one is more aware of the needs of the various different types of ecosystems than those who
develop and manufacture filters for aquariums, and Hydor-brand replacement and filtering
materials provide the most satisfying response to all aquarium needs. So as to guarantee optimal
results at all times, Hydor recommends the use of original products and replacement parts
studied and conceived for use in combination with its filters.
Below is a simple guide for an informed, accurate use of the products.
Biological filtering
The filter of the aquarium is an authentic ecosystem in which "good" bacteria are raised, which
are useful for nitrification, for eliminating toxic substances such as ammonia and nitrites. In order
for suitable bacterial flora to develop efficiently, "biological" materials are used, on the surface
of which the bacteria breed. The larger the surface available in a certain volume, the greater the
"biological" filtering power of the filter. Following careful study and research, Hydor has chosen to
use porous sintered quartz, which guarantees 8.25 m
mechanical filtering
This is, generally speaking, a very simple filtering process, during which the materials
"mechanically" retain the coarse particles of dirt sucked in by the filter pending the work carried
out by the bacteria to reduce the particulate matter to the size of molecules, which are then dealt
with in the "biological" area.
There are two types of materials:
medium-to-thick texture or materials for pre-filtering (normally sponges)
•
fine-texture materials for blocking the small particles after filtering and preventing them
•
returning into the aquarium (filter wool)
Chemical filtering
Some chemical substances present in the aquarium, such as colourants or nitrates, are molecule-
sized, and there are no sponges able to trap them. For such compounds, there are some products
with specific functions that can be inserted into the last of the filtering compartments:
active carbons: able to trap colourant molecules and medicinal treatments. They should
•
not be used continuously in the filter, because their power of absorption runs out in a few
days, after which they form a bacterial substratum with the potential to slowly release the
molecules previously absorbed.
Zeolites and clinoptinolites: minerals able to eliminate ammonia, ammonium, sulphides,
•
sulphites and heavy metals.
Ideal when starting up a new aquarium, they guarantee the elimination of ammonia
•
even before the bacterial flora has developed efficiently.
Ideal in mature aquariums to eliminate biological load and waste substances from the
•
nitrogen and carbon cycles.
Ionic exchange resins: anti-nitrates or anti-phosphates, resins able to provide a quick solution
•
to the difficult situations involving nitrates and phosphates. To be used in situations of
particular need, for brief periods.
