Why grind teeth?
The teeth of sucking pigs are sharp and pointed and can easily damage the sow's udder and teats. To protect the sow's udder and also to ensure
calm and harmonious suckling it used to be customary to cut the teeth of sucking pigs. This also prevented bite injuries to the rest of the litter.
Tooth cutting is a painful procedure for a sucking pig. When they are cut with a pair of tooth-nippers, even if the tooth is cut correctly, vertical
cracks can easily occur in the dental enamel and the pulp of the tooth (nerves, blood vessels, connective tissue) becomes exposed. The cracks
constitute a very high risk of future infection for the pigs. In many cases these infections are not discovered until slaughter.
