PDC (49211)
Cervical spine immobilising orthosis with mobilising function
Purpose
PDC is a cervical orthosis that surrounds the neck and incorporates a mobilisation
function. It is used to immobilise the cervical spine. The orthosis may only be used for
cervical spine treatment.
The concept
The physiotherapeutic, dynamic cervical collar provides either bilateral or single sided
immobilisation of the cervical spine. The main focus of product development was
the concept of earliest possible functional treatment. The PDC should, as much as
possible, prevent the painful disruption of mobility and promote free movement.
Special consideration was given to the free front access to the neck, so that the PDC
can be worn by patients who have an enlarged thyroid gland, or have undergone
tracheostomy. The open–frame construction and the highly porous, air permeable
foam padding achieve an excellent degree of patient acceptance and compliance.
Indications
Changes due to wear and tear (degeneration), sprains and strains (distortions),
postoperative.
Contraindications
Skin lesions or diseases in the affected area.
Side effects
None reported when applied and worn as intended.
Putting on the orthosis
1. Place the orthosis around the neck so that the arrow on the fastening is pointing
upwards.
2. Close the velcro fastening at the back of the neck. The stabilising orthosis should lie
comfortably around the neck and be neither too tight nor too loose.
Exercises with the PDC
It is the aim of these exercises to improve muscle tone, which has a positive effect
upon the stabilisation of the cervical spine.
After consulting your doctor the following exercises are recommended:
(1) Lateral flexion
Lower the head sideways left or right against the resistance of your own hand. Hold
for approx. 20 seconds, then relax and repeat.
(2) Rotation of the head
When doing this exercise try and turn the head left or right against the resistance
of either hand holding the chin. Here, too, you should keep up the pressure for 20
seconds, before pausing and repeating on the other side.
