If an external power supply is not being used, then the device should be
switched off when not in use in order to preserve the batteries (switch-
position "Off / Line Test").
4.2

LED Low Battery

The red LED "Low Battery" indicator warns the user that battery
reserves have reached a critical level. When indicated, device batteries
should be re-charged before the next use. Should the VIT-A1 DSL-
Tester continue to be used despite the "Low Battery" warning, then the
device will automatically turn off at some point in order to protect the
batteries from excessive de-charging.
Alternatively, stationary operations can be powered over a mains power
adapter. As soon as an external power source is connected to the DC
socket, the device will automatically switch from battery to mains
operation without interrupting measurements that are in progress.
4.3

LED Charge

While device batteries are being "quick-charged," the yellow LED
indicator will be lighted. The requirements for this procedure are that the
flip-switch on the front side of the housing is in the "Off / Line Test"
position and, thereafter, an external power source (auto battery or
mains adapter) is connected to the DC socket.
As soon as the charging procedure is terminated (empty batteries
require about 3 hours), the LED "Charge" indicator goes off and the
device switches to internal maintenance charging.
4.4

LED Line Test

The green "Line Test" LED indicator shows whether a remote feeder
current is on the line for an analog or ISDN connection. This requires
that the flip-switch is already switched to the proper "Line Test" position.
Response levels for testing for current can be found in section 5,
Technical Data.
