Outdoor Fireplace Safety
Outdoor fireplaces are very popular in backyards throughout
North America. Although their use is typically allowed under
state or provincial fire codes, there may be restrictions with which
residents must comply. Adhering to these requirements and
safety tips will assure a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.
CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL CODE OFFICIAL
REGARDING SPECIFIC OUTDOOR BURNING
ORDINANCES.
• Only seasoned firewood should be used as fuel for outdoor fires.
• Outdoor fires should be located away from any adjoining
property lines and 15 feet from any combustible structure or
materials. Combustible structures include dwellings, garages,
sheds, decks and fences.

General Safety Practices:

• Do not use the fireplace during high wind conditions.
• Jøtul highly recommends use of our optional Spark Arrest
Screen to provide additional safety. Check with your local
building and fire code jurisdiction as a spark arrest screen may be
required on wood-burning outdoor fireplaces in your area.
• The fireplace should be located on a firm, non-combustible
surface such as a brick, stone, or concrete patio.
• DO NOT burn leaves, trash or yard debris.
• The fire must be attended to at all times. If the fire is to be left
unattended, it should first be extinguished.
• Never use a flammable liquid to start the fire.
• Prior to removing ashes, allow them to cool for at least
twenty-four (24) hours. Keep the ashes in a metal waste can
with a tight-fitting metal lid and AWAY FROM BUILDINGS
AND COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS.
• Keep your neighbors in mind while burning outdoors. Smoke
and other products of combustion can have an impact on
surrounding yards and be drawn into neighboring houses.
