14. Troubleshooting
Warning:
Always switch the machine off and pull the plug out of the socket prior to troubleshooting.
Trouble
Quill returns too slowly or too
quickly
Chuck wiII not stay attached to
spindle. It wiII falls off when trying
to install.
Noisy operation
Wood splinters on underside of
the drill.
Workpiece torn loose from hand.
Drill bit burns.
Drill leads off or hole is not round.
Drill bit binds in workpiece.
Excessive drill bit run-out or
wobble.
Problem
Spring has improper tension.
Dirt, grease or oil on the tapered sur-
face of the spindle or of the chuck.
Incorrect belt tension
Dry spindle.
Loose spindle pulley.
Loose motor pulley.
No suitable material beneath work-
piece.
Workpiece not supported or clamped
properly.
Incorrect speed.
Chips not coming out of hole.
Dull drill bit.
Feed too slow.
Hard grain in wood or lengths of
cutting lips and/or angle not equal.
Bent drill bit.
Work piece pinching drill bit or exces-
sive feed pressure.
Improper belt tension.
Bent drill bit
Worn spindle bearings.
Drill bit not clamped centrally in
chuck.
Chuck not properly installed.

Remedy
Adjust spring tension. See "Adjust-
ing the spindle retaining spring".
Use household detergent to clean
the surfaces of spindle and chuck.

Adjust belt tension. See "Choosing

Test spindle.
Check tightness of retaining nut on
pulley and tighten, if necessary.
Tighten set screw in motor pulley.
Use suitable material. See "Posi-

Support workpiece or clamp it.
Change speed. See "Choosing

Retract drill bit frequently to
remove chips.
Resharpen drill bit.
Increase feed rate.
Resharpen drill bit.
Replace drill bit.
Support workpiece or clamp it. See

Use a straight drill bit.
Replace bearings.
Check the centring of the drill. See
