5. Instructions
The Ambu Airway Man is designed to meet the training recommendations of the
International Guidelines 2005 committed to by the American Heart Association
(AHA) and the European Resuscitation Council (ERC).
In general, however, it is recommended that instructions should be based on the
techniques and provisions applicable in the country in which training will take
place.
The movements of the chest can be clearly observed during insufflation and expira-
tion. The insufflated volume is displayed directly on the monitoring instrument.
Accidental stomach inflation is simulated and can be observed in the stomach
region and viewed directly on the monitoring instrument.
External chest compression can be practiced, and the depth of compression will be
displayed on the monitoring instrument in millimeters.
It is possible to adjust the stiffness of the chest to simulate a patient with a soft,
normal or hard chest. To ensure that the correct point of compression is applied
during chest compression, the instrument also provides indication of incorrect
hand positioning.
The Ambu Airway Man is not supplied with a hygienic system, as normally a resus-
citator is used. Mouth-to-mouth ventilation must therefore not be
used.
Ventilation can be performed by using a resuscitator with mask, or intubated and
ventilated via endotracheal tube.
5.1 Intubation
The Ambu Airway Man can be intubated through the mouth (oral intubation), the
use of an 8 mm I.D. endotracheal tube is recommended. Intubation through the
nose (nasal intubation) is not possible. The insertion of the laryngoscope and
