Instructions for re-seasoning
If the patina has been damaged and your Irons for instance start to rust, they must be re-seasoned.
Proceed as follows:
• Separate the two halves from one another and thoroughly remove the rust with a wire brush. Clean
the halves with warm water, a dishwashing detergent and a dishwashing brush. Dry well afterwards.
• Grease the entire surface of the cast-iron halves inside and out with Petromax Care Conditioner, a
neutral oil or vegetable fat. Pay special attention to edges and hinges. Do not use olive oil or other
types of fat with a lower smoke point, for they burn too quickly.
• Place the separated halves next to each other e.g. on a preheated kettle grill at approx. 180 °C. The
wooden handles should protrude from the grill. Let bake for about 2 hours and leave to cool down
slowly afterwards. Afterwards, once again apply a thin layer of Petromax Care Conditioner for Cast
and Wrought Iron or a neutral, high-temperature oil inside and outside. Your iron is now ready for use
again. When you use an alternative heat source for re-seasoning strictly observe the safety instructions.
Baking, roasting and cooking
The Petromax Burger, Sandwich and Waffle Irons are also perfectly suited to prepare other kinds of
food directly over the fire. For all Petromax Irons equally applies that you should preheat them well
before use in the fire or on the grill. This works most evenly when you separate the cast-iron halves of
your respective Iron via the hinges, heat them next to one another and assemble again. Afterwards,
grease well with a high-temperature oil or vegetable fat to prevent the food from sticking. You can
then add burger patty, sandwich and co. and get roasting. In the fire or on the grill always place your
Iron in such a way that the wooden handles cannot accidentally catch fire. Tripping hazard! Never
place the handles unattended on the ground. At best take turns with someone or use a suitable, clearly
visible tray at the same height for your Irons, for instance some specially stacked stones or an unused
grilling grate near your fire or grill. Beyond savoury burgers, sandwiches and steaming waffles options
of preparation are virtually unlimited.
Use at campfire
When using the Irons at the campfire you need to get testing: Each type of wood creates different
embers that glow longer or shorter, respectively. Also keep in mind that when holding your Iron with
food directly into the fire for some time it might burn on the outside and still be uncooked / cold on the
inside. Now you must also test when and where the heat spreads evenly. Often it suffices to preheat the
Irons well in the fire and exclusively use this stored heat for cooking the food. Above all, this applies to
the Petromax Waffle Iron with long or short bar. When you place the Irons directly by the fire you can
simmer some dishes also by means of radiant heat. Indispensable for that matter, however, is regular
turning to guarantee even heating.
