2. General safety notes

BITO Pallet racking has been designed for storing standardised load carriers with a
single and a total load limit on beam levels. The most commonly used load carriers are
wood pallets and load carriers from plastic or steel.
Only use appropriate service vehicles for rack servicing. If your pallet racking integra-
tes pick levels such as carton fl ow shelves or pull-out pallet positions at human reach
height, these pick levels must be serviced manually.
Single loads, shelf loads and bay loads must not exceed rated load capacity limits.
Head protec-
Make sure that loads are evenly distributed since structural calculations assume
tion
uniformly distributed loads.
Any other use or any use exceeding that specifi ed is an infringement of use for the
intended purpose.
Follow the instructions on design & layout, components & technical equipment, assem-
Safety shoes
bly & operation specifi ed in the order documents.
Installations in Germany must comply with the safety regulations for warehouse equip-
ment and machinery (Richtlinien für Lagereinrichtungen und -geräte) as specifi ed by
the DGUV regulation 108-007 of the German Statutory Accident Insurance Association
as well as the regulations set up by the German Occupational Safety and Health Acts
Protective
(Arbeitsstättenverordnungen) and the relevant accident prevention regulations.
eyewear
Installations outside Germany must comply with the relevant national/local accident
prevention regulations for warehouse equipment and machinery.
High visibility
The present instructions do not apply for shelving and racking used outdoors or in
vest
harsh environments subject to wind, snow and other mechanical stress factors. Mo-
reover, load capacities indicated in the present document are not valid for earthquake
hazard zones (structural design does not resist seismic forces). Inform BITO in writing
if your installation is to be set up in an earthquake hazard area and request adaptation
General
of structural design parameters to the seismic requirements of your region.
remark
Damaged or deformed racking components must immediately be replaced.
BITO Shelving and racking is not suited for use in environments with exposure to corro-
sion, splashing liquids, decomposition, vibrations, explosions, radiation.
Hearing
protection
It is not permitted to use loads or load carriers which due to their nature are subject to
oxidation, rust, decomposition or which might impair proper functioning of any kind of
mechanism.
Storing unpacked foods that are in direct contact with racking parts and components
is not permitted.
Incoming goods awaiting fi xture and fi tting into BITO storage facilities must be stored
indoors. Outdoor storage of such parts and components is not permitted.
A racking row has a minimum of 4 bays. Each racking bay has at least two beam levels.
End frames of a racking row must be at least 500 mm higher than the top beam level.
Walkways and vehicle traffi cways must be secured against falling loads.
The fi rst beam level on top of vehicle traffi cways must be bolted to the frames.
Aisles alongside single deep racking rows that are used by pedestrians or service
vehicles and that are not intended for loading and retrieving goods must be secured
against falling loads.
Back-to-back racking rows must be installed with a safety spacing of at least 100 mm
between the load carriers. If the minimum clearance between load carriers cannot be
maintained, push-through stops must be fi tted.
Racking corners and passageways must be secured by corner / upright protectors
with yellow-black signal striping, a minimum height of 400 mm and a shock absorbing
capacity of at least 400 nm.
