Personnel installing, programming, operating or maintaining this device must have read
and understood these instructions.
Safety regulations
Installation, commissioning, modification and retrofitting must only be performed by a
qualified electrician.
Disconnect the device/system from the power supply before starting work. If installation
or system errors occur, mains voltage may be present at the control circuit in the case of
non-electrically isolated devices.
The safety function of the device must be activated at least once annually!
When installing the equipment, please observe the electrotechnical and professional
trade association safety regulations.
Opening the case or manipulating the equipment in any other way will render any warran-
ties null and void.
In the case of improper use or any use other than for the intended purpose, the device
must no longer be used and any warranty claims shall be void. Exposure to the following
(amongst other things) is not permitted: significant mechanical strain on the device (e.g. if
the device is dropped); voltages, currents, temperatures, humidity levels outside the
specifications.
Always check all safety functions in accordance with the applicable regulations during ini-
tial commissioning of your machine/system, and observe the specified inspection cycles
for safety devices.
The application-specific standards must be observed when installing and operating the
device.
The device must be installed in accordance with IEC 60364-4-44.
Take the following safety precautions before starting installation/assembly or disassem-
bly work:
1. Disconnect the device/system from the power supply before starting work.
2. Secure the machine/system to prevent it being switched back on.
3. Confirm that no voltage is present.
4. Earth the phases and short-circuit them briefly.
5. Cover and shield neighboring live parts.
6. The devices must be installed in a switch cabinet with a protection class of at least
IP54.
Limited contact protection.
− Protection class according to EN 60529: IP40 / IP20.
− Finger-proof according to EN 50274.
The contact protection of the connected elements and the insulation of the supply lines
must be designed for the highest voltage applied to the device.
The safety function must be checked again if the devices have been operated outside the
specification for current, voltage or temperature limits. This is especially true if a fuse
has tripped.
According to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, operation is only permitted with a
PELV/SELV power supply according to EN 60364-4-41.
Disposal
Unusable or irreparable devices must always be disposed of in accordance with the relevant
country-specific disposal regulations that apply (e.g. European waste code 16 02 04).
1 Function description
This device is a two-channel safety switching device for safety applications with self-moni-
toring on each ON-OFF cycle. It conforms to EN 60204-1, EN 81-20/50, EN 50156-1 and is
equipped with positively driven relays.
After supply voltage has been connected to terminals A1/A2 and the safety inputs closed,
operating the reset button closes the enabling current paths (manual start). When the safety
inputs are opened/de-excited the enabling current paths will open.
Notes
The Performance Level (PL) and safety category in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1 de-
pends on the external wiring, the application case, the choice of control station and how
this is physically arranged on the machine.
The user must carry out a risk assessment in accordance with EN ISO 12100.
The entire system/machine must undergo validation in accordance with the applicable
standards on the basis of this.
In order for the specified Performance Level (PL) to be achieved, an average annual num-
ber of switching cycles must not be exceeded (see EN ISO 13849-1, C.2.4 and Tab. K.1),
taking into account the prevailing device load (see EN ISO 13849-1, Tab. C.1) and the ap-
plication case. Assuming that the B10d value for the maximum load is 400,000, this results
in a maximum cycle number of 400,000 / 0.1 × 30 = 133,333 switching cycles/year.
The supply input A1 also serves as a control input. This may lead to short disruptions or a
lowering below the operating voltage in order to switch to the release path.

Proper use
The devices are safety switching devices. They must only be used as
components of safety equipment on machines intended to protect per-
sons, material and plant.
Only use the device in accordance with its intended purpose. Pay partic-
ular attention to the information in the technical data.
The indicated times must be observed when the device is operated, otherwise the device
could lock. Locking can be cancelled by opening the safety inputs properly. The
SNA40xx/KM types are especially suitable for use in applications with fast and short
bounce operations, since these devices prevent locking.
SNE expansion devices or external contactors with positively driven contacts can be used
to duplicate the enabling current paths.
The devices are equipped with overload protection (for short-circuit). After the malfunc-
tion has been dealt with, the device is operational again in approx. 3 s.
Control output S11 is exclusively for connecting control devices as defined in the operat-
ing instructions and not for connecting external consumers such as lamps, relays or con-
tactors.
The devices must be installed in a cabinet with a protection class of at least IP54.
With the application in furnaces (according EN 50156) output circuits are to be secured
with 0.6 × I
.
