The Squids
®
Self-Adhering Tape Trap is designed for ease-of-use, and to help reduce the risk of dropped tools when used with an
appropriate tethering system (refer to Using A Tethering System instructions). The Squids
tested to create retrofit attachment points on tools, allowing users to safely tether them if a secure tool connection point is not
available.
DEFINITIONS: "Tool Tails™" – A system component that is captured by the "Trap" and includes a tethering attachment point.
"Tool Traps™" – A system component that's applied independently over the "Tail", fixing it securely to the tool and securing it in the
event of a drop.
WARNINGS: All warnings and instructions must be read and understood before using this product. Failure to do so may result
in property damage, serious injury, or death.
•
Do not use tool attachments in temperatures below -40°F / -40°C or above 150°F / 65°C.
•
Never exceed the allowable capacity for any tethering system component. Refer to the individual component's label.
Your tethering system is only as strong as its weakest link.
•
Always inspect Tool Attachments prior to, and after, each use (refer to INSPECTION instructions).
•
Only use Tape Traps with specifically designated Tool Tails™ or as otherwise instructed for use.
•
Squids® Tape Traps should NOT be used with other manufacturers tails or other attachments.
•
Do not wrap Tape Traps around sharp or rough edges.
•
Never modify or alter your Tape Trap.
•
Never modify a tool that could result in a manufacturer guideline deviation or diminish the integrity of the tool. Consult
with the tool manufacturer if you have any questions.
•
Do not use this product if it interferes with the tool's safe working condition.
•
Use extra precaution around moving machinery or parts, electrical hazards, chemical hazards or other apparent
hazards.
•
Never attach a tool with a Squids® Tool Attachment to a lanyard that is longer than the Maximum Lanyard Length
indicated on the product label of the tool attachment (refer to the "Using a Tethering System" portion of the
instructions).
•
Attachments and lanyards are for tool use only. They are not for human support, nor are they intended to be part of a
human fall protection system.
•
Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when installing or using tethering systems.
SHELF LIFE
Shelf date refers to the tape's ability to hold its adhesion strength of 2lbs/square inch. The application of the product should
be inspected regularly to examine the tape's hold on the trapped object. Any sign of tape unraveling is grounds for removal
from service and replacement. Shelf Life only applies to unused, un-bonded tape. Once tape is applied and has bonded to
itself, shelf life does not apply, however, the tape should be inspected regularly. The "Date of Expiration" (DOE) / "Use By"
date can be found on the UPC sticker on the packaging and the inner core of the tape roll.
PREPARING FOR APPLICATION
•
Ensure tools are clean, dry and free of grease, oil or other substances during application.
•
Read instructions completely before and during assembly.
•
Weigh your tool to determine the appropriate Tool Tail™ and Trapping solution/measurement (e.g. length of tape)
needed for the application (see the selection grid). In some situations, there are multiple options, so the user may
choose their preference.
REQUIRED ITEMS FOR ATTACHING ELASTIC LOOP/CINCH TOOL TAILS™
•
Appropriate Tool Tails™ (see selection grid)
- Tool Tethers/Lanyards can be attached directly to tools using the same steps
below. Substitute Tool Tether for Tool Tail.
•
Appropriate Tool Trap™ model (see selection grid)
1.
For attachment to tools with a captive hole or handle engineered hole into the tool [fig. 1], locate the tools connection
point and slide the Tool Tail™ through the captive hole or handle and feed the d-ring end back through the loop
choking it onto tool pulling it tight to remove slack. Snug barrel lock down if applicable.
2.
For non-captive tools, choke or cinch the elastic loop Tool Tail™ onto the tool by wrapping it around a straight shafted
area that does not inhibit the use of the tool [fig. 2].
3.
Feed the D-ring end through the loop end of the Tool Tail™ [fig. 3]. Pull the loop tight to remove slack. Snug barrel lock
against the tool if applicable [fig. 4].
a.
Ensure the tail is positioned as far up the tool shaft as possible without affecting its use. A minimum of 1 in. /
25mm away from the end of the tool is suggested.
4.
Select the appropriate Tool Trap™ using the selection grid. To secure your Elastic Tool Tail with tape you can use one of
two methods [fig 5A-B]:
a.
Lay the tool tail down on the tool and wrap the indicated amount of tape wraps over the tool and tail following
the instructed below, pressing the tail against the tool. Ensure the connection point is free to connect a tether [fig
5-A].
b.
Keep the tail off of the tool and wrap the tape in a crisscross fashion over the tail's loop following the instructions
below [fig 5-B].
5.
Pulling with moderate tension, wrap the Trap Tape over the Tool Tail overlapping each previous wrap by at least 0.5in /
1.3cm. When there is less than one wrap left press the end of the tape on top of the previous wraps. Let the tape cure
for a minimum of 20 minutes before using.
6.
Attach a tool lanyard to complete an appropriate tethering system [fig. 6].

REQUIRED ITEMS FOR ATTACHING WEB TOOL TAILS™
•
Appropriate Tool Tails™ (see selection grid)
•
Appropriate Tool Trap™ model (see selection grid)
1.
Chose the location on your tool where the Web Tool Tail will be placed.
a.
Ensure it is a location that does not inhibit the use of the tool.
b.
Ensure the tail is positioned as far up the tool shaft as possible without affecting its use. A minimum of 1 in. /
25mm away from the end of the tool is suggested.
2.
Take the indicated amount of Trapping Tape and wrap one full wrap around the tool [fig 7]. The Web Tool Tail will be
placed over this initial wrap.
3.
Before wrapping any more Trapping Tape lay your Web Tool Tail on top of the initial Wrap [fig 8].
a.
Ensure that the web catch points, and label are facing up.
b.
Tuck the label into the tail's d-ring to keep it out of the way for installation. This will allow the label to lay on top
of the solution and be visible to the user after installation is complete.
5.
Pulling with moderate tension, continue wrapping the Trap Tape over the Tool Tail overlapping each previous wrap by
at least 0.5in / 1.3cm. Keep the entire body of tape between the web catch points [fig. 9]. When there is less than one
wrap left press the end of the tape on top of the previous wraps. Let the tape cure for a minimum of 20 minutes before
using.
6.
Attach a tool lanyard to complete an appropriate tethering system [fig. 10].
