8. MAINTENANCE & TROUBLESHOOTING
The following chart addresses some of the common problems of MMA welding. In all cases of equipment malfunction, the
manufacturer's recommendations should be strictly adhered to and followed.
Trouble
No arc
Porosity − small
cavities or holes
resulting from gas
pockets in weld
metal
Excessive Spatter
Weld sits on top,
lack of fusion
Lack of penetration
Excessive penetration
- burn through
KEEP WORKiNG
KEEP WORKiNG
Keep Working
Possible Reason
Incomplete welding circuit
No power supply
Arc length too long
Work piece dirty, contaminated or
moisture
Damp electrodes
Amperage too high
Arc length too long
Insufficient heat input
Work piece dirty, contaminated or
moisture
Poor welding technique
Insufficient heat input
Poor welding technique
Poor joint preparation
Excessive heat input
Incorrect travel speed
Suggested Remedy
Check earth lead is connected. Check all cable
connections.
Check that the machine is switched on and has a
power supply
Shorten the arc length
Remove moisture and materials like paint, grease,
oil, and dirt, including mill scale from base metal
Use only dry electrodes
Decrease the amperage or choose a larger
electrode
Shorten the arc length
Increase the amperage or choose a larger
electrode
Remove moisture and materials like paint, grease,
oil, and dirt, including mill scale from base metal
Use the correct welding technique or seek
assistance for the correct technique
Aumente el amperaje o elija un electrodo más
grande
Use the correct welding technique or seek
assistance for the correct technique
Check the joint design and fit up, make sure the
material is not too thick. Seek assistance for the
correct joint design and fit up
Reduce the amperage or use a smaller electrode
Try increasing the weld travel speed
