5. Commissioning and operation
5.11
Cable connections
The cable gland must be sealed to ensure that the required ingress protection is
reached.
Requirements for meeting ingress protection
Only use cable glands within their indicated clamping range (cable diameter suitable
■
for the cable gland).
Ensure proper clamping range is met when using very soft cables.
■
Only use circular cross-section cables (if necessary, slightly oval in cross-section).
■
Do not twist the cable.
■
Repeated opening/closing is possible; however only if necessary, as it might have a
■
detrimental effect on the ingress protection.
For cables with a pronounced cold-flow behaviour the screw connection must be fully
■
tightened.

Removal and installation of the replacement sensor
Ensure that the thermocouple tip is fully inserted into the guide channel
prior to putting it under the tube clips. Mark the sensor for insertion length, if
necessary.
Fully disconnect the electrical connections to the terminal block or transmitter.
■
Loosen the neck tube to allow the thermocouple sensor to freely move. Guide the
■
sensor inside the furnace during removal.
Locate the tube clips and bend at the open end away from the tube. The thermocoup-
■
le sensor should slide out from under the tube clip.
Slide out the thermocouple sensor from the heat shield. Remove the sensor from the
■
furnace.
Compare the corresponding replacement sensor with the length of the removed
■
sensor. Ensure there is enough MIMS cable to reach the termination box, perform
any on-site bending and expansion loops as required.
Prepare the new sensor to insert into the heat shield. Insert the sensor into the heat
■
shield opening and ensure it bottoms out inside the guide channel.
Place the thermocouple sensor under the tube clips. Ensure clips are bent up to
■
allow for unobstructed placement of thermocouple sensor. Forcing the thermocouple
sensor underneath clips could cause damage to the thermocouple sensor.
Force tube clips down after the thermocouple positioning to ensure good sensor to
■
tube contact.
Assemble instrument neck tube as per the installation requirement. If applicable,
■
attach the connection head. Route the thermocouple sensor to the termination
location and complete electrical connection.
