6.1 Battery
Daily battery handling greatly influences the life
and performance of the battery. Be sure to
perform inspection and maintenance to maintain
the battery in the best condition.
6.1.1 Handling batteries
Replace or charge batteries in designated
areas. Exercise caution when changing or
charging batteries. The work area must have
draining facilities and adequate ventilation and
be free of potential fire hazards.
Always use protective equipment, such as
goggles, face shield, rubber gloves and rubber
apron, when handling the battery.
Inspect the specific gravity and the electrolyte
level once a week.
The battery electrolyte level should be all the
way up the specified level mark.
Consult the Service Centre when any of the
following condition has occurred:
• Abnormal or bad smell detected
• Electrode darkened
• High electrolyte temperature
• Electrolyte level lowering quickly
Keep the battery clean. Keep the battery top,
especially, clean and dry. Keep the vent caps
tightly closed.
Freezing temperature varies according to the
specific gravity and the charge level. The higher
the specific gravity and the greater the charge
level, the less easy it is for a battery electrolyte
to freeze up. Use care when using the battery in
cold climates, because the frozen battery may
lead to a failure of the battery plate. Do not
charge the frozen battery.
When installing a battery in a battery-less
forklift, use batteries that match the weight and
capacity of the forklift.
For detailed instructions, follow the instructions
provided by the battery manufacturer.
~WARNING
Never allow an open flame near the battery. The
battery produces explosive hydrogen gas. An
open flame or spark can cause the gas to ex-
plode.
