The Aqua Medic Sulphur Reactor SR 400 is equipped with two tube connections and can be used
as outside or inside filter. The filter is installed with the enclosed holder at a horizontal brace or the
aquarium glass. The filter is connected via a tube and a bypass T-piece to a pump with a sufficient
flow rate. The water should flow upwards through the filter.
The Sulphur Reactor SR 400 is filled with sulphur beads which serve as food and growth
substrate for the bacteria. The water flow through the system is very slow, approx. one
drop/second and the water depletes of oxygen. In the Sulphur Reactor, special bacteria reduce
nitrate by oxydizing sulphur in an oxygen-free environment. The residue is nitrogen gas that
escapes into the environment.
Installation
The attached holder makes a simple installation of the filter in or at the aquarium possible. The
upper holder plate and all screws have to be removed. Then, the holder can be shoved on a
horizontal brace in the aquarium or on an aquarium glass. It is fixed with two screws. The Sulphur
Reactor SR 400 can be connected to a separate pump or every standard outside filter via a 6/4
tube and the included T-piece. We recommend to install an adjusting tap behind the T-piece in the
pressure pipe. By easy closing of this tap, the pressure will increase toward the nitrate filter and
saves constant adjustment of the flow rate.
Before the first operation, the filter should be rinsed with water to avoid cloudings through possible
residual particles of the filter material. The granules included in the Sulphur Reactor are suitable
for fresh and salt water.
In particular during the start phase, the nitrate and nitrite content of the outflowing water should
be checked regularly. If larger quantities of nitrite are proved, the flow rate has to be reduced. The
outflowing water is strongly sour since the bacteria produce sulphuric acid with this kind of
decomposition. This would lower the pH-value and carbonate hardness of the aquarium water. In
order to prevent this, a reactor filled with calcium carbonate can be connected at the outlet side
(available as accessory). This reactor would convert the sulphuric acid into calcium sulfate. Thus,
the total hardness would increase in fresh water, in salt water the calcium content would rise.
If a part of the sulphur beads has been used by bacteria, they have to be replaced – or better, the
whole content should be renewed. For replacing the granules, unscrew one of the two connecting
pieces and shake the used granules out. Residual particles are removed by rinsing with water.
Then, the filter can be filled with new material. So that the device shuts tightly, the thread has to
be cleaned from remaining sulphur beads with water. Do not forget the sealing ring when screwing
in the connecting piece!
