1 Place the UPS near the equipment it will protect. Do not put the UPS near a source of
heat. Do not block the UPS' ventilation holes.
You will find the label shown inserted in this manual.

Write your UPS service representative's telephone
number and/or e-mail address on the label. (See
Customer Process for Service on page 13) Then, attach
the label to the UPS or place it near the UPS. Do not
place the label over the UPS' ventilation holes. If your
UPS needs service or if you have UPS questions, this
label will provide the contact information you need.
For B40, B42, and B44 models: Plug

the UPS power cord into the utility
(mains) power outlet.
For B41 model: Power off the AS/400,
detach the power cord from the
AS/400, and use it to plug in the UPS
as shown. (Do not use the equipment
cord(s) that are supplied with the UPS
for input power connection.)
4 Let the UPS charge the battery for at
least 3 hours (7 hours for 1425 VA
model if it is fully loaded). You may use the UPS while the battery charges, but the battery
backup runtime will be reduced until the battery is fully charged.
Note: The On/Standby button must be pressed and held for about one second to turn the

UPS on or off. To start the UPS now, press and hold the On/Standby button (the bottom
button on the front panel). When the UPS starts, it will:
5.a. Beep, then light the front panel lights, turn them off, and light them again. Next, the
Fortress applies AC output to the back panel receptacles. It does a brief self test
next, and turns various front panel lights off and on.
5.b. After 30 seconds or less, the self test ends. The top and bottom green lights will come
on and remain on. If the UPS beeps, or if the top light does not remain on, even though
input power is available from the wall outlet, go to the Troubleshooting section on
page 11.
6 For B40, B42, and B44 models: Power off the AS/400 and plug its line cord into an outlet
on the back of the Fortress.
