2. Commissioning and lighting
• CONE is supplied fully assembled.
• Place the CONE charcoal grill on a level and stable surface. Ensure that before lighting the coals, the charcoal grate and ash bowl
is properly inserted and slide the lever in the middle position.
• To achieve a constant high heat höfats recommends the use of good quality charcoal-briquettes or charcoal. Ensure the quality
of grill coals by paying attention to the EN-logo. Store these in a dry place. For a grilling time of 1 hour you require approx. 1 kg
of standard charcoal briquettes, with charcoal you will require approx. 1.5 kg. CAUTION! The maximum capacity of charcoal (for
grilling) or wood (for fire basket) is 1,5 kg (3.3 lbs charcoal).
• We recommend using grill lighters (conforming to EN 1860-3) instead of liquid firelighter.
Do not use any liquid such as petrol, spirits or similar liquid accelerant to do this. (Only use firelighters that comply with EN
1860-3!) We recommend using grill lighters (conforming to EN 1860-3) instead of liquid firelighter.
Never add liquid firelighter or coals soaked in it to hot or warm charcoal!
• Open the lid before lighting the fire.
• Remove the cooking grate and second level grate.
• Possibly empty the ash bowl, see 5. (only after the coals are completely extinguished)
• Remove accumulated ash as required from the bottom part of the grill (only after the coals are completely extinguished).
Charcoal requires oxygen to burn. Check that the ventilation system is free of dirt.
• Do not start grilling until the coals are covered with a light layer of ash. This takes about 30 – 45 minutes. Then arrange the coals
using long tongs or coal rake according to the desired method of grilling.
• When using the grill for the first time cleaning the cooking grate and second level grate.
2.1 Lighting with the höfats charcoal starter
• Remove the charcoal grate
• Place the grill lighters in the middle of the empty ash bowl and light them. (Only use firelighters that comply with EN 1860-3!)
• Insert the charcoal grate and ensure that it is properly inserted. The three legs of the charcoal grate must be center up in the ash
bowl.
• Now place the höfats charcoal chimney in the middle of the charcoal grate
and fill it. höfats recommends the use of good quality charcoal-briquettes or
charcoal. CAUTION! The maximum capacity of charcoal (for grilling) or wood
(for fire basket) is 1,5 kg (3.3 lbs charcoal).
• Leave the lid open until the charcoal has a light covering of grey ash, this
takes about 30 minutes. Now strip of the chimney in a vertical motion and
start to grill. Use barbecue mitts for this.
2.2 Lighting with a conventional charcoal starter
• Considerat the manual of the charcoal chimney.
• Place the grill lighters in the middle of the charcoal grate and light them. (Only use firelighters that comply with EN 1860-3!)
• Place the filled charcoal chimney in the middle of the charcoal grate, over the burning grill lighters. höfats recommends the use
of good quality charcoal-briquettes or charcoal. CAUTION! The maximum capacity of charcoal (for grilling) or wood (for firebas-
ket) is 1,5 kg (3.3 lbs charcoal).
• Leave the lid open until the charcoal has a light covering of grey ash, this takes about 30 minutes.
• Empty the charcoal chimney carefully on the charcoal grate and start to grill.
2.3 Lighting without a charcoal starter
• Remove the charcoal grate.
• Place the grill lighters in the middle of the empty ash bowl and light them. (Only use firelighters that comply with EN 1860-3!)
• Insert the charcoal grate and ensure that its properly inserted. The three legs of the charcoal grate center up in the ash bowl.
• Now place the charcoal in the middle of the charcoal grate. höfats recommends the use of good quality charcoal-briquettes or
charcoal. CAUTION! The maximum capacity of charcoal (for grilling) or wood (for fire basket) is 1,5 kg (3.3 lbs charcoal).
• Leave the lid open until the charcoal has a light covering of grey ash, this takes about 30 -45 minutes.
2.4 Basic knowledge for grilling
• Read the recipe through and look for the instructions on setting the grill. With the höfats grill you have two cooking methods
available to you – direct or indirect. On the following pages you will find specific instructions.
• Do not try to save time by placing the food on the grill when the correct grilling temperature has not been reached. Leave the
charcoal to burn until a layer of light-grey ash has formed on the coals.
• Use a barbecue turner or tongs, but not a fork, because it lets juices escape and with them flavour which causes the food getting
dry.
• Check if the food fits onto the grill before closing the lid. Ideally there should be a gap of approx. 2 cm between individual food
items.
• Do not open the lid to look at the food. Every time the lid is lifted heat escapes, in other words the meal takes longer to reach the
table.
• Only turn the food once if the recipe requires so.
• If you close the lid of the grill, flames cannot build up under the food, you reduce the cooking time and get better grill results.
Never flatten food such as e. g. burgers. Doing this juice is squeezing out of the meat and dries the food.
• If you baste the food lightly with oil, it will brown evenly and not stick to the cooking grate. Only brush or spray the food with oil
and not the cooking grate.
• Wash your hands and the implements thoroughly with hot water and detergent before and after handling fresh meat, fish or
poultry. Alternatively you could use disposable gloves.
• Never put cooked food on the same plate on which you have had raw food. Only defrost your food in the fridge and not at room
temperature.
Tip: For an extra smoked flavour you can add smoke chips or fresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme or bay leaves to the embers. Lay
the herbs or wood directly onto the coals when you start to grill.
