curate measurement and routine checking within a range of 0.25-10 mg/l
(ppm) of phosphate levels in unplanted koi ponds. Using the compensa-
tion method specially developed by JBL, precise and reliable results can
even be obtained in moderately discoloured water, e.g. as a result of peat
filters and disease treatment.
Why test?
Phosphate, an important plant nutrient, only occurs in very low concen-
trations in natural waters. The average values are around 0.01 mg/l in
unpolluted natural waters. Plants and algae have adapted to this scarce
supply of phosphate, so that they can survive with minimum amounts.
In koi ponds, phosphate primarily enters the water as a result of the diges-
tive processes of the fish and food remains. If conditions are unfavourable
(particularly in heavily populated koi ponds), the phosphate levels may
reach values that are sometimes 100 times higher, and more, than natural
levels. Undesirable algae will then multiply explosively as an inevitable
consequence. By timely measurement of the phosphate concentration
using the JBL Phosphate Test Kit PO
Koi high range, this threat can be

recognised and prevented by appropriate measures. Here, it is important
to know that algae are able to store significant amounts of phosphate, to
the effect that they can also continue to grow unabated after the phos-
phate concentration in the water has been lowered. The sooner the threat
of an increasing phosphate concentration is recognised, the better the
prospects of averting an approaching algae plague quickly.
Levels in unplanted koi ponds should be under 0.5 mg/l. There is still no
serious danger for the fish, even if levels are much higher than 3 mg/l. Ide-
ally, phosphate cannot be detected in a koi pond with this test, i.e. it is less
