is plugged in, the basket is inserted correctly and
the slide switch is in the auto (I) position.
•
When the overheat LED is lit, place the slide switch
in the off (O) position for at least 40 minutes. This
will allow the motor to cool down.
3 .3 Shredder capacity
The intimus 21 CP4 will shred up to fourteen (14)
sheets of paper and will accept paper widths up to
220 mm. When shredding small material like envelo-
pes, credit cards or receipts insert them in the middle
of the paper feed opening (Fig. 1/4).
3 .4 Shredding CD's/DVD's
When shredding CD's and DVD's always insert them
one at a time in the middle of the feed opening
(Fig. 1/4).
3 .5 Emptying the receptacle
Proceed as follows:
1 . Remove the receptacle from in front of the machi-
ne and empty its contents.
2 . Replace the empty receptacle under the machine
and push all the way to the back.
NOTE!
The machine will only run when the receptacle
is pushed completely into the machine!
3 .6 Cautions for operating
Caution!
Damage to the machine!
Ì When manually changing feed direction,
pause long enough for the motor to stop.
Ì Continuous shredding of computer paper
should not exceed 8 minutes. Shredding
longer than 8 minutes could result in over-
heating the motor.
Ì Always turn off or unplug the shredder
prior to moving, cleaning or emptying the
wastebasket.
Ì Empty receptacle frequently.

Malfunctions
Caution!
Danger of injury!
Be sure to keep fingers and any personal
effects away from the throat of the feed
opening while the shredder cutters are in
motion.
4 .1 Motor overload
The intimus 21 CP4 is equipped with an automatic
motor overload protection circuit. Continuous shred-
ding should not exceed 8 minutes. The intimus 21 CP4
will automatically terminate power during any of the
following abnormal situations:
•
Operating the shredder at the maximum 14-sheet
capacity continuously for a prolonged period of
time, eg. more than 8 minutes without stopping.
•
Exceeding the shredding capacity, eg. lnserting
more than fourteen (14) sheets paper in one pass,
or if the paper is not fed squarely into the feed
opening.
Both abnormal operations may result in the activation
of the automatic thermal motor overload protection
circuit, which terminates the power to the shredder.
A paper jam could cause the thermal motor overload
protection to terminate AC power to the motor. Never
allow the shredder to remain in a jammed condition
with the AC power turned on.
lf this occurs you should:
4 .2 In case of a minor paper jam
1 . Place the slide switch (Fig. 1/3) in rev and pull the
remaining sheets of paper out of the feed opening.
2 . Remove the unshredded portion of paper from
the top and clear any excess paper shreds from the
feed opening.
3 . Place the slide switch back in the auto (I) position.
4 .3 In case of a major paper jam
1 . Turn off or unplug the power cord from the AC
outlet and wait at least 40 minutes for the thermal
overload protection to reset.
2 . Plug in the AC power cord and place the slide
switch (Fig. 1/3) in the off (O) position.
3 . lf paper was left inside the feed opening prior to
the overload, place the slide switch in the rev posi-
tion and grasp the excess paper from the top and
pull it out.
4 . Clear any excess paper shreds from the feed ope-
ning. Be careful not to place your fingers near the
