Roughing-In (cont.)
The recommended height of the hand rail is 34" (86.4 cm) above the finished shower floor. The knee
wall ledge height should be 31-3/8" (79.7 cm) to meet this height.
NOTE: 34" (86.4 cm) height is a recommendation only. The hand rail may be installed to a height based
upon the needs of the user.
Securely attach the knee wall to the stud wall.
Storage ledges are not included in the height of the general knee wall construction. The height of
the ledges is determined by the tile installation, as determined below.
Each ledge length should be a minimum of 6" (15.2 cm) to allow proper installation. Construct the
ledges to the desired length based on shower size and hand rail length.
Install the shower pan or receptor when the knee wall construction is completed.
Maximum length of the hand rail is 54" (137.2 cm) for the K-1846 and 30" (76.2 cm) for K-1845.
The minimum cut length for both models of the hand rail is 12" (30.6 cm).
To provide proper support when the hand rail is being used, the top flange of the wall rail should
be fastened into at least two studs, preferably three. Install a backer board or additional studs for
additional support if the minimum number of studs are not available.
Shower doors take special framing considerations at the end of the knee wall. At least two floor to
ceiling studs should be located at each side of the door location to provided support for the door.
Do not install the waterproof membrane at this time. Install the waterproof membrane before
installing the cement board.
Front - Wall
Tile must be installed flush with the front of the hand rail.
Determine if shimming will be needed to achieve the 1-5/16" (3.3 cm) thickness needed for a flush
installation.
1-5/16" (3.3 cm) - (A + B + C) = X (Optional).
If shims are required, install shims running from the floor to the top edge of the vertical stud
(1-1/2" (3.8 cm) from the top of the knee wall).
Flush - Top
NOTE: The end cap has a slight forward pitch (2°). Installations should account for this pitch for superior
fit and finish.
The top of the hand rail is 2-5/8" (6.7 cm) higher than the surface of the knee wall.
Calculate shim or wood thickness needed for a flush installation. 2-5/8" (6.7 cm) - (A + B + C) = D
Install a shim or piece of wood at the determined thickness (D) on the installation surface on the
knee wall.
Make sure the shim or wood is securely attached.
Overlay - Top
NOTE: The end cap has a slight forward pitch (2°). Installations should account for this pitch for superior
fit and finish.
The top of the hand rail is 2-5/8" (6.7 cm) higher than the surface of the knee wall.
