When the battery low indicator 1 lights up red, the bat-
tery pack must be charged. When the battery pack is
empty, the measuring tool can also be operated with
the battery charger 30. Switch the measuring tool off
and connect the battery charger to the measuring tool
and to the mains supply. When the battery pack is
deeply discharged, it must be charged for approx.
15 minutes before the measuring tool can be switched
on and operated with the connected battery charger.
A considerably reduced operating period after charg-
ing indicates that the battery pack is used up and
must be replaced.
To change the battery lid with installed battery pack,
loosen nut 16 and remove the battery lid 20.
Install a new battery lid 20 with battery pack. Pay attention
that the contacts 19 of the battery lid and the contacts 18
of the battery compartment are aligned properly and have
contact. Firmly tighten the battery lid with nut 16.
Remove the battery pack from the measur-
ing tool when not using it for longer periods.
When storing for longer periods, the rechargeable
batteries can corrode and discharge themselves.
Operation
Initial Operation
Protect the measuring tool against direct
sunlight.
Do not subject the measuring tool to
extreme temperatures or variations in tem-
perature. As an example, do not leave it in vehi-
cles for longer periods. In case of large variations
in temperature, allow the measuring tool to adjust
to the ambient temperature before putting it into
operation. In case of extreme temperatures or var-
iations in temperature, the accuracy of the measur-
ing tool can be impaired.
Avoid heavy impact to or falling down of the
measuring tool. After severe exterior effects to
the measuring tool, it is recommended to carry out
an accuracy check (see "Accuracy Check of the
Measuring Tool", page 29) each time before con-
tinuing to work.
Setting Up the Measuring Tool
Position the measuring tool on a firm surface in the
horizontal or vertical position, mount it to a tripod or to
the wall mount 35 with alignment unit.

Due to the high levelling accuracy, the measuring tool
reacts sensitively to ground vibrations and position
changes. Therefore, pay attention that the position of
the measuring tool is stable in order to avoid opera-
tional interruptions due to re-levelling.
Switching On and Off (ALH)
Do not point the laser beam at persons or
animals and do not look into the laser beam
yourself, not even from a large distance.
Do not leave the switched on measuring tool
unattended and switch the measuring tool
off after use. Other persons could be blinded by
the laser beam.
To switch on the measuring tool, press the On/Off
button 8. The switching on is confirmed by the opera-
tion indicator 9 lighting up for 3 s. Immediately after
switching on, the measuring tool sends out the varia-
ble laser beam 11.
In horizontal position, the measuring tool immediately
starts the automatic levelling after switching on. During
the coarse levelling, operation indicator 9 flashes, the
laser flashes and does not rotate. After completion of
the coarse levelling, operation indicator 9 and the laser
beam light up continuously and the measuring tool
automatically starts in rotational operation. The measur-
ing tool precisely levels itself within the next 60 s.
When factory set, the shock-warning function is auto-
matically switched on, and the shock-warning indica-
tor 2 lights up red.
To switch off, press the On/Off 8 pushbutton again.
Switching On and Off (ALHV/ALHV-G)
Do not point the laser beam at persons or

ing on, the measuring tool sends out the variable laser
beam 11 and laser beam 21.
The measuring tool immediately starts the automatic
levelling after switching on. During the coarse level-
ling, the laser flashes in point operation. After comple-
tion of the coarse levelling, the laser beam lights up
continuously and the measuring tool automatically
starts in the last stored operating mode after switch-
ing off. The measuring tool precisely levels itself within
the next 60 s.
When factory set, the shock-warning function is auto-
matically switched on, and the shock-warning indica-
tor 2 lights up red.
To switch off, press the On/Off 8 pushbutton again.
