INSTRUCTION MANUAL

CHANGING THE BULB

Always unplug your system and allow the bulb to cool before handling it. Sodium and halide bulbs
should be replaced after approximately one to 1.5 years of continuous use at 12-18 hours per
day. Running a bulb beyond its expected lifetime is not recommended. We recommend using the
Hydrofarm light meter (item #LG17010) to measure light performance.
1. Unplug the reflector and allow the unit to cool.
2. Twist the bulb counter-clockwise to remove it from the reflector.
3. Install the replacement lamp.
CLEANING THE REFLECTOR
1. Unplug the reflector and allow it to cool.
2. Lift the reflector off its hanging mechanism. Set the reflector bulb-side up on a sturdy surface.
Optional: Place the reflector on a towel or soft cloth.
3. Unscrew the bulb. Set aside.
4. Mix warm, mild soap and water and apply sparingly with a clean washcloth. Dry with a second
washcloth. Flip reflector over to cleanse both sides.
5. Run a dry, soft washcloth over bulb to remove dust particles.
6. Screw the bulb back into the reflector.
7. Reattach the reflector to its hanging mechanism and plug in the power cord.
TIPS
• Make sure you have the appropriate wattage ballast for the lamp. Check the box, accompanying
papers, or Hydrofarm.com.
• The lamp may require 10-30 minutes cooling time before restarting.
• After you plug in the Hammerhead, the bulb may require several minutes to reach its
full brightness. In the event of a momentary power interruption, the bulb will not restart
immediately.
• Some variation in the color of light emitted by the bulb is not unusual, especially in the first 100
hours of operation.
• Never pull the cord to unplug the reflector. Pull the plug only.
• Avoid scratching the bulb, subjecting it to undue pressure, or getting it wet when it is hot – these
actions may cause the bulb to break.
• In the event of bulb breakage, immediately unplug the reflector to prevent exposure to
ultraviolet energy, which may be harmful to eyes and skin.
• Keep room temperature below 95 degrees F, with adequate air circulation by fan in the growing
area.
• Keep plants far enough away from the bulb to prevent heat damage. Leaves showing signs of
wilting or burn damage are too close. For a 1,000 watt bulb, two to three feet distance is usually
appropriate; less distance is allowable with lower wattages.
• Always use a heavy-duty three-pronged grounded timer, rated for at least 15 amps. Many 7-day
digital timers are not rated for 1,000 watt lamps.
