provide extremely good conditions for the development of colonies of cleansing bacteria
which play an essential role in the breakdown of pollutants. Mechanical pre-filtering ensures
that these bacteria can efficiently carry out their task undisturbed for as long as possible.
You can of course select filter materials to meet your special needs. A wide range of JBL filter
materials are available for you to adapt your filter for particular circumstances. The choice
of filter material can, however, influence the pumping capacity of your filter and affect the
length of time the filter materials can be used.
Note: Regular maintenance and cleaning of the filter is vital to prevent a reduction in the
pump capacity.
7
Cleaning or replacing filter material
The mains plug must be disconnected before any work is carried out on the filter!
Turn the two small stopcock levers on the pump head to the stop position (●) opposite the
"OPEN" mark. Lift the middle lever up as far as possible and push to the stop position. This
lifts the hose connection block slightly. Pulling upwards, lift the hose connection block out.
The ball valves in the hose connection block are now closed and retain the water in the
hoses. This prevents accidental opening e.g. by children and any leakage of water.
Open the 4 fastening clips on the filter canister and remove the pump head. Check the seal
between the upper combi filter basket and the distributor plate as mentioned in Chapter 1.
Remove the filter baskets with the filter material and rinse the filter material in lukewarm
aquarium water (25°C). Never rinse the filter materials under the tap as the chemicals in our
tap water kill the beneficial bacteria colonising the filter. This will lead to a spike in pollutants
or 'new tank syndrome'. Never wash ALL the filter material at the same time as too many
beneficial cleansing bacteria would be washed away. The e-Series JBL CristalProfi Filters are
designed so that, as a rule, only the pre-filter material (F1) has to be cleaned whilst the re-
maining filter material should only be cleaned at longer intervals.

Function and replacement intervals of the different filter materials
(F1) Pre-filter material
Mechanical pre-filter material made of coarse foam cut into a T-profile to absorb as much
coarse dirt as possible. This material should be changed every 2 months. The material can be
rinsed once or twice.
(F2) Ceramic rings (JBL CerMec):
Mechanical filter material, which also works biologically through colonisation by cleansing
