Step Cutting

Probable Cause
HOC (height-of-cut) settings are
different from one side of a reel to the
other or from one cutting unit to
another.
Worn front roller bearings.
Reel-to-bedknife contact is different
from one side of the cutting unit to the
other or from one cutting unit to
another.
Cutting reel movement is restricted.
Variations in turf density.
Machine weight distribution is uneven.

Step cutting occurs when grass is cut taller on
one side of a reel than the other or one cutting
unit to another. This is usually caused by
mechanical wear or an incorrect roller or HOC
(height-of-cut) adjustment.
Remedy
Check HOC adjustment of cutting units.
Check/replace front roller bearings.
Check reel-to-bedknife contact.
Check/remove cutting reel movement obstruction.
Change mowing direction.
Check/adjust tire inflation pressure.
