INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION SPI54 / SPI54A / SPI55
CAUTION
When fuel is involved, ensure to work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks and open flames. To reduce risks of fire and personal injury,
relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing fuel system components.
A. Fuel Pressure Relief
Before working on the fuel system components it is mandatory to relieve the fuel system pressure. Failure to follow these procedures may result in personal injury or
fire hazard from fuel spray.
1. Remove the fuel cap from fuel tank to relieve tank pressure.
2. Remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse block.
Support
3. Start engine and run until the fuel in the fuel lines is consumed.
4. Place the ignition switch in the "OFF" position and replace the fuse.
5. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
B. Fuel Tank and Hanger Assembly Removal
Pump out the fuel tank with a fuel transfer pump. Insert a gasoline transfer pump hose into the filler neck all the way until the hose is resting at
the bottom of the tank and completely drain the tank of all fuel. Ensure to store the fuel in an appropriate container.
1. Raise the car.
2. Disconnect electrical connectors from sender unit.
3. Disconnect fuel hoses from sender and tank.
4. Remove the filler neck and vent hoses from the tank.
5. Remove any skid plates or shields that may interfere with the removal of the tank.
6. Support the tank and remove the retaining straps.
7. Carefully lower and lay down the fuel tank.
Pump
8. Clean the area around the sender unit of any scrap and dirt to avoid contaminating the fuel tank
9. Remove the retaining ring by using the appropriate tool
.
10. Remove the sender unit and gasket
C. Fuel Pump Replacement
Float
1. Remove the screws that secure the float assembly to the pump unit but do not cut the float assembly wire.
2. Disconnect the wire from the hanger's or pump bracket if necessary.
3. Remove the screws that secure the pump unit to the hanger or pump bracket.
4. Cut the pump unit wires as close to the pump bracket as possible.
5. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, remove the pump unit from the hanger or pump bracket.
6. Install a new strainer on the fuel pump unit and make sure to orient it in the same direction as the old strainer.
7. Insert the hanger tubes into the new pump unit and secure with screws.
8. Strip 1/4 inch of insulation from the end of the pump wires if necessary.
9. Join the wires together by crimping the butt connectors and appropriate crimping tool. Be careful to maintain the polarity of the wires (red to red and black to black).
10. Secure the float assembly to the fuel pump with screws and reconnect the pump wires to the hanger's terminal spade connector or pump bracket.
D. Fuel Tank and Hanger Assembly Installation
1. Position and install correctly the gasket on the tank.
2. Insert the sender unit into the tank.
3. Install the lock ring and tighten it by turning clockwise.
4. Raise and support the fuel tank under de vehicle and re-install the retaining straps.
5. Re-install fuel hoses and electrical connectors.
6. Lower vehicle and reconnect the battery negative (-) terminal.
7. Refill the fuel tank.
8. Start the vehicle and inspect for fuel leaks.
9. Correct any leaks if necessary.
10. Clear the electronic control system of any trouble codes that may result from the fuel pump replacement. Use the specific vehicle service manual for assistance.
Warning
Fuel pumps cannot function without fuel. Activating a pump without fuel for more than 3 seconds can
damage it and warranty may be void.
