641429 - STRUT COIL SPRING COMPRESSOR
WARNING: Spring is under compression load when installed. Attempting to remove the spring without properly restraining the
load with a spring compressor may result in personal injury. DO NOT remove nut at top of strut rod unless spring is restrained
by a spring compressor.
WARNING: Proper use of this tool requires a bench-mounted vise. Use of the tool without a vise is NOT recommended.
1. Remove MacPherson strut assembly as described in vehicle servicing information. Make index marks between strut and
knuckle to aid in installation. Also index mark the strut position at the inner fender inside engine compartment.
2. Position the clamping tab on the back of the spring compressor between the jaws of a vise and tighten the vise until the
spring compressor is held securely. See figure 1
3. Position the strut so that the top end (the end with the large nut) is facing the same direction as the square drive (for use
with a Ratchet or Impact Wrench) on the spring compressor. Hold the strut slightly above the spring compressor and
position the strut so that the jaws of the spring compressor will engage the coils of the spring at both ends as the strut is
lowered. The spring compressor jaws should not be outside the lower spring perch or the spring perch at top end of the
strut. It may be necessary to adjust the jaw width of the spring compressor slightly such that it correctly matches the length
of the coil spring gaps. See figure 2
4. Lower the strut so that it is at the bottom of the spring compressor jaws. See figure 3
5. Insert the safety wire pin into the hole in spring compressor jaws Warning: There are 2 different hole positions on each jaw
depending on the size / diameter of the coil spring. Select the position that best fits your application. See figure 4. Make sure
that the toggle on the pin rotates so that the pin is locked in position and can not be removed. See figure 5. From one jaw
to the other run the safety wire through the inside of the coil spring and out before the last coil perch, and inert the pin into
the opposite compressor jaw. See figures 6 and 7. The final assembly should have the safety wire running through the coil
spring and with the connecting pins secured on both jaw plates. See figure 8
6. Lift the strut assembly up and position it so that the spring compressor jaws engage the coils of the spring securely.
See figures 9. Use a 1/2 in. square drive Ratchet or Impact Wrench to slowly and carefully turn the square drive
counterclockwise and compress the spring. See figure 10. Warning: Never allow the safety wire pins to disengage from the
jaws.
7. Continue to compressing the spring until the spring separates from the spring seats and the strut is loose and can be moved
inside the spring. See figure 11.
8. Disassemble the strut by carefully removing the nut from the top of the rod by using a Ratchet or if the nut is difficult to
remove an Impact Wrench can be used here to remove the top nut as well. See figures 12 and 13. If using a Ratchet it may
be necessary to hold the top of the strut rod with pliers to prevent the strut rod from turning while removing nut. Remove
strut top plate, upper bearing plate and dustcap, and upper spring seat as outlined in vehicle service information. See figures
14, 15, and 16.
9. Remove the Strut from the spring assembly by carefully backing it out from the compressed spring. See figure 17. Leave the
coil spring installed in the compressor. See figure 18. Warning: Removing the spring from the compressor prior to replacing
the strut cartridge is not necessary and is not recommended. Proceed with strut disassembly and component overhaul as
described in vehicle service information and as recommended by the manufacturer of the replacement shock cartridge.
10. To reassemble and install, reverse removal procedures and refer to vehicle servicing information. If installing an aftermarket
replacement strut cartridge, it may be necessary to add a small amount of hydraulic oil to the strut housing. Refer to
cartridge manufacturer's installation instructions. Note that gas-charged units are sold with the rod in a locked down position.
Follow the cartridge manufacturer's instructions to release the rod. Reassemble all necessary original parts. Align index
marks during installation. Remove the spring compressor only after the nut at the top of the rod is securely tightened.
