Setting up the ladder
■
The ladder must be set up in the correct position, e.g. at the correct angle for
extension ladders (70 °), with the rungs or steps horizontal, or fully open for
stepladders.
■
Locking devices, if present, must be fully secured before use (Fig. 4).
■
The ladder must be placed on a level, horizontal and immobile surface.
■
An extension ladder must be leaned against a level, solid surface and secured
before use, e.G. By using a suitable fixing device to keep the ladder securely in
place.
■
The ladder must never be repositioned from above.
■
When positioning the ladder, pay attention to any risk of collision, e.g. with
pedestrians, vehicles or doors. Lock doors (not including emergency exits) and
windows in the work area, if possible.
■
Assess all the risks caused by electrical equipment in the work area, e.g. high-
voltage overhead power lines or other exposed electrical equipment.
■
The ladder must be placed on its feet, not on the rungs or steps.
■
The ladder may not be placed on slippery surfaces (e.g. ice, smooth surfaces or
heavily soiled, hard surfaces) without taking additional measures to prevent the
ladder from slipping or to ensure that the soiled areas are sufficiently clean.
Using the ladder
■
Do not exceed the maximum load for the respective ladder type.
■
Do not lean too far out from the ladder; the user should keep their belt buckle
(navel) between the rails and keep both feet on the same rung.
■
Do not step off at heights greater than the extension ladder without additional
safety measures, e.g. fixing device or using other suitable measures to keep the
ladder secure and stable.
Do not use step ladders to climb onto another surface.
■

Do not stand on the top three rungs of the ladder.
■
Ladders should only be used for light work of a short duration.
■
For unavoidable work with electrical voltages, use non-conductive ladders.
■
Do not use the ladder outdoors in unfavourable weather conditions, e.g. strong wind.
■
Take precautionary measures to prevent children from playing on the ladder.
■
Lock doors (not including emergency exits) and windows in the work area, if possible.
■
Face the ladder when climbing up or down.
■
Hold on tight when climbing on and off the ladder.
■
Do not use the ladder to bridge gaps.
■
Wear suitable shoes when climbing the ladder.
■
Avoid excessive load on the sides, e.g. when drilling in masonry and concrete.
■
Do not stay on the ladder for too long without regular breaks (fatigue is a hazard).
■
Extension ladders for access to greater heights must extend at least 1 m beyond
the contact point.
■
Objects that are transported while climbing the ladder should be light and easy
to carry.
■
When working on the ladder, hold on with one hand or, if not possible,
take additional safety measures.
