b) Check the operation of the spring for the
lower guard. If the guard and spring don't op-
erate perfectly, these parts must be repaired
before use. The lower guard may work stiffl y due to
damaged parts, resin deposits or shaving build-up.
c) The lower guard must be retracted by hand
only for special cuts, such as piercing cuts or
composite cuts. Lift the lower guard while
moving the entry lever inward. As soon as
the saw blade enters the material, the lower
guard must be released. For all other saw work,
the lower guard must work automatically.
d) Always make sure that the lower guard cov-
ers the saw blade before setting the saw on
the workbench or fl oor. An unprotected, coasting
blade will cause the saw to spring back and cut through
anything in its path. Be aware that it takes some time for
the saw blade to come to a stop after the switch has been
released.
Additional safety instructions for all
saws with riving knife
a) Use the correct riving knife for every saw
blade. For the riving knife to function properly, it must
be thicker than the body of the saw blade, but thinner
than the blade's tooth set.
b) Adjust the riving knife according to the de-
scription in this operating manual. Incorrect
spacing, positioning or alignment can make the riving
knife ineff ective in preventing kickback.
c) Always use the riving knife unless you are
making piercing cuts. After the piercing cut, the
riving knife must be reinstalled. During piercing cuts, the
riving knife is an obstacle and can cause kickback.
d) For the riving knife to work properly, it must
grip into the work piece. For short cuts, the riving
knife is ineff ective at preventing kickback.
e) Never use the saw if the riving knife is bent.
Even light obstacles can make a guard take longer to
close.
