2 Description and Function
2.1 Application and Recommendation
The 3R46 Modular Polycentric Knee Joint with Hydraulic Swing Phase Control is to be ex-
clusively used for the prosthetic fitting of amputations of the lower limb.
According to the Otto Bock Classification
culation amputees with higher functional levels and a body weight up to 100 kg/
220 lbs. It is not recommended for patients with moderate or lower functional levels. The
Hydraulic Swing Phase Control Unit found in this knee is highly beneficial for optimizing gait
pattern especially for patients with high functional levels.
2.2 Construction
The Upper Joint Section (3) with coupling core and the Lower Joint Section (2) of this poly-
centric knee joint are connected by Posterior (4 + 5) and Anterior (6) Linkage Bars. The
Lamination Anchor (1) is attached to the socket and performs the adjustable connection to
the coupling core. The polycentric design of this joint provides a rotational and translational
movement. The center of rotation (instantaneous center of rotation) changes its position de-
pending on the degree of flexion. In the extended position, the center of rotation is placed at
the height of the femoral condyles. This moves downward and forward with increased flex-
ion. The small integrated Hydraulic Swing Phase Control Unit (17) provides resistance to
motion, thus enabling the leg to move smoothly and naturally. Other than mechanical gait
controls, the hydraulic system automatically accomodates varying gait speeds. The amount
of resistance to motion (damping resistance), for both flexion and extension, may be ad-
justed independently (refer to section 6).
3 Alignment
Correct static alignment for the prosthesis starts with the determination of the individual
weight bearing line. Transfer of the patient's measurements to the prosthetic components
then follows according to the illustrated alignment recommendations (see illustration).
