Sunrise Medical recommends that a clinician such as a
doctor or therapist experienced in seating and positioning be
consulted to determine if a JAY Foam Cushion is appropriate.
Cushions should only be installed by an authorized Sunrise
Medical supplier.
GENERAL WARNINGS!
DO NOT install this equipment without first reading
and understanding this manual. If you are unable to
understand the Warnings, Cautions and Instructions,
contact a qualified clinician or supplier - otherwise injury or
damage may occur.
Hook and Loop velcro should not come into prolonged
contact with moisture as this may degrade the adhesive
and lead to a failure of the velcro.
Installing a cushion on a wheelchair may affect the center
of gravity of the wheelchair and may cause the wheelchair
to tip backwards, potentially resulting in injury. Always
assess for the potential need for antitippers or amputee
axle adapter brackets to be added to the wheelchair to
help increase stability.
Prior to prolonged sitting, any cushion should be tried for
a few hours at a time while a clinician inspects your skin
to ensure that red pressure spots are not developing.
You should regularly check for skin redness. The clinical
indicator for tissue breakdown is skin redness. If your
skin develops redness, discontinue the use of the cushion
immediately and see your doctor or therapist.
The JAY Foam Cushion is designed sitting comfort and
postural support, remember no cushion can completely
eliminate sitting pressure or prevent pressure sores.
If you need more pressure distribution for skin protection,
ask your authorized supplier for a free demonstration of any
of the other JAY cushion products.
The JAY Foam Cushion is not a substitute for good skin
care including; proper diet, cleanliness, and regular pressure
relief.
Allow the cushion to warm to room temperature before
using. Sitting on extremely cold or hot surfaces can cause
skin damage.
Avoid sharp objects or exposure to excessive heat or open
flame.
OBSTRUCTIONS: Do not place any obstructions
between the user and the cushion because it will reduce
product effectiveness.
CUSHION AND COVER ORIENTATION: Product must
be used with the cushion cover facing up. If the cover is
not used correctly it may reduce or eliminate the cushion's
benefits and could increase risk to the skin and soft tissue.
JAY Basic & Soft Combi
INTRODUCTION
The JAY Foam Cushion is designed for sitting comfort and
postural support.
Maximum user weight:
34 to 50 cm width = 150 kg
56 to 60 cm width = 225 kg
FITTING THE JAY FOAM CUSHION
Select a JAY Foam cushion that matches the width of your
wheelchair.
The cushion length should extend to within 1" - 2" (2.5 -
5cm) from the back of the knees.
Place the cushion to the back of the chair with the material
identification tags to the back and the bump towards the
front.
The product label should be visible on the right side of the
cushion.
Adjust the footrests so your legs rest comfortably on the
cushion.
Lowering the footrests on your wheelchair may help
reduce the pressure on your ischials, (seat bones) and
coccyx, (tailbone).
NOTE:
Proper footrest adjustment may enhance sitting comfort.
Avoid using the cushion on overly stretched seat
upholstery. Replace stretched seat upholstery or purchase
a JAY solid seat insert for your cushion.
Contact an authorized supplier for a free demonstration.
FITTING A LUMBAR SUPPORT
If your JAY foam cushion includes a lumbar support, its proper
use may help to reduce lower back discomfort and sitting
fatigue.
1.
Adjust lumbar support height so that maximum thickness
of lumbar support is at your waist or belt line.
2.
Attach the lumbar support by looping one Velcro® strap
attachment over the back of the chair, under the push
handle and back around the front of the chair. The hook
Velcro on the back of the strap should secure to the loop
Velcro on the front of the strap.
3.
Repeat the attachment process on the opposite side,
making sure that the lumbar support is centered on the
wheelchair.
4.
If additional support is required, a 1/2" (1cm) thick foam
insert can be placed inside the cover behind the lumbar
support. This acts as a shim to increase the thickness of
the lumbar support.
NOTE:
Junior size lumbar supports attach with an elastic strap
and buckle instead of Velcro® straps.
Varying the height of the lumbar support during the course
of the day may help relieve sitting fatigue.
Placing the cushion about 1", (2.5cm), further forward in
the wheelchair makes it more comfortable to use with the
lumbar support.
If your cushion did not include a lumbar support but you
would like its benefits, contact an authorized supplier for a
free demonstration.
