7. DMX Operation

Refer to the illustrations on page 2 of this manual.
The VDPLDJBAR3 batten is a DMX-controlled unit and does not offer any internal presets, patterns or programs.
The two DMX modes are:
DMX Mode ("d")
• Press the MODE selection button [1] until the display [4] shows "d". After a few seconds, the display will
show the DMX starting address.
• All DMX-controlled devices need a digital start address so that the correct device responds to the signals. This
digital start address is the channel number from which the device starts to "listen" to the DMX controller. The
same starting address can be used for a whole group of devices or an individual address can be set for every
device.
• When all devices have the same address, all the units will "listen" to the control signal on one particular
channel. In other words: changing the settings of one channel will affect all devices simultaneously. If you set
individual addresses, each device will "listen" to a separate channel number. Changing the settings of one
channel will only affect the device in question.
• In case of the 20-channel VDPLDJBAR3, you will have to set the start address of the first unit to 001
(CH1~20), the second unit to 021 (1 + 20) (CH21~40), the third to 041 (21 + 20) (CH41~60), and so on.
• Use the UP [2] or DOWN button [3] to select a DMX starting address. After selecting, it takes ± 3 seconds
before the address becomes active. The display shows alternately the address and "d".
• The selected address is automatically stored in memory.
• While a DMX-signal is received, an LED on the lower right will be on.
• The unit receives DMX values in a packet of 20 channels and mirrors this data on the DMX output [6]. These
20 channels are distributed over each of the four panels:
First panel:

CH2
CH3

Second panel: CH6~10 as above
Third panel: CH11~15 as above
Fourth panel: CH16~20 as above
Reverse DMX Mode ("dr")
The reverse DMX mode ("dr") allows the panel assignment to the 20 received DMX channels to be reversed. This
function is useful if two VDPLDJBAR3 battens are positioned left and right on a stage. Running one unit in
normal DMX mode ("d") and the other unit in reverse DMX mode ("dr") with same start address will yield a
symmetric geometrical behaviour.
• Press the MODE selection button [1] until the display [4] shows "dr". After a few seconds, the display will
show the DMX starting address.
