3.3.2 Operating conditions
The increased hazard in potentially explosive atmospheres
requires the careful observance of the instructions and warn-
ings. Explosion-proof electrical devices are subject to the
standards of the EN 60079series. They may only be operated
in potentially explosive atmospheres in accordance with the
explosion protection rules in force for the operating company.
The operating company is in charge of the determination of
the explosion danger and of the zone classification.
The explosion protection certification will become void if the
encoder is modified with respect to its delivered condition,
e.g. by dismounting parts, adding additional type plates,

changing the thermal properties or in the event of use differ-
ent from that stated in the description. No repair work is al-
lowed at the flameproof joint.
Standard EN 60079-14 in its latest edition must be adhered
to during installation and commissioning. In mounted condi-
tion, all of the equipment must have a sufficient mechanical
resistance.
Information on the ignition protection category and the tem-
perature class is specified on the type plate. The mechanical
end electrical characteristics of the encoder such as speed,
ambient temperature, operating temperature, mechanical
load or max. supply voltage shall in no case be exceeded.
Elastomers used for encoder tightness (e. g. o-rings) are sub-
ject to standard EN 60079-31:2014. Make sure that the seal-
ing elements do not wear prematurely or are not damaged
because of impermissible influences. This can occur e.g. by
direct UV radiation or use of aggressive media (e. g. acids) or
sharp objects.
