Reduction of algae problems and improvement of living
conditions in
aquariums through the biological breakdown of nitrate
1.
Where does nitrate come from in the aquarium?
The breakdown or mineralisation process of all organic matter
in the aquarium (food and plant remains, fish excretion) occurs
through the steps proteins > ammonium > nitrite > nitrate.
Certain bacteria, which settle especially in the filter and at
the bottom of the aquarium, are responsible for this process.
However, since a high nitrate content promotes the growth
of unwanted algae, it is best not to let the nitrate content in
aquarium water rise over approx. 50 mg/l.
2. What is biological nitrate removal?
Biological removal is the reduction of nitrate to gaseous nitrogen
through the working of bacteria. Certain bacteria are able to
use the oxygen bound in the nitrate molecules for breathing
and thereby to reduce the nitrate to gaseous nitrogen which
escapes into the air. This process is called denitrification. This
is the way to naturally remove the nitrate in the aquarium.
3. What is JBL BioNitratEx?
JBL BioNitratEx is the easiest method for the reliable
biological removal of nitrate:
JBL BioNitratEx consists of filter balls, which are made of
bioplastics, which serve as an ideal food source for nitrate-
degrading bacteria. That means that denitrifying bacteria
preferably settle on this material to break it down. During this
process the bacteria remove the nitrate from the aquarium. At
the same time this stabilises the carbonate hardness and the
pH value.
4. Use in freshwater:
Dosage: 1 ball for 2 – 3 l water (1 pack with 100 balls for
200 – 300 l)
Just fill the required quantity of JBL BioNitratEx balls into the
last filter stage of your current external filter. Always cover the
balls with a fine filter fleece (e.g. JBL SymecPad) to prevent the
micro parts, which arise during the breakdown process, from
obstructing the impeller.
After a start-up period of about 4 weeks the bacteria will be fully
settled on the material and the nitrate content will slowly begin
to drop. Over time it will level off to about 5 mg/l. If you notice
the KH gradually decreasing, you can correct this by adding
JBL AquaDur plus.
