9. Maintenance
• Make sure that the engine has
stopped and is cool before
performing any service to the
machine. Contact with moving
cutting attachment or hot muffler
may result in a personal injury.
■ AIR FILTER
The air filter must be regularly cleaned to
remove dust and dirt in order to avoid:
• Carburetor malfunctions
• Starting problems
• Loss of engine power
MA2a
• Unnecessary wear to engine parts

• Excessive fuel consumption.
Clean the filter every 25 hours, or more
regularly if conditions are exceptionally
dusty. (MA2a)

• Remove the air filter cover and take out
the filter. Wash it clean in warm, soapy
water. Clean also the inside of the filter
cover by using air or a brush. Ensure
that the filter is dry before refitting it.
• Remove the Felt filter from the filter
holder and gently brush debris from the
filter. An air filter that has been in use
for a long time cannot be cleaned
completely. The filter must therefore be
replaced with a new one at regular
intervals. A damaged air filter must
always be replaced. Damaged, very
dirty, or fuel-soaked air filter must
always be replaced.
■ FUEL FILTER
MA3
• When the engine runs short of fuel
supply, check the fuel cap and the fuel
filter for blockage. (MA3)

WARNING
■ SPARK PLUG
• Starting failure and mis-firing are often
MA4
caused by a fouled spark plug. Clean
the spark plug and check that the plug
gap is in the correct range. For a
replacement plug, use the correct type
specified by RedMax. (MA4)

• REPLACEMENT PLUG IS A NGK
0.655mm
BPMR8Y.
IMPORTANT
• Note that using any spark plug other
than those designated may result in the
engine failing to operate properly or in
the engine becoming overheated and
damaged.
• To install the spark plug, first turn the
plug until it is finger tight, then tighten it
a quarter turn more with a socket
wrench.
■ MUFFLER
WARNING
• Inspect periodically, the muffler for
loose fasteners, any damage or
corrosion. If any sign of exhaust
leakage is found, stop using the
machine and have it repaired
immediately.
• Note that failing to do so may result
in the engine catching on fire.
■ SPARK ARRESTER
• The muffler is equipped with a spark
arrester to prevent red hot carbon from
MA5
flying out of the exhaust outlet.
Periodically inspect and clean as
necessary with a wire brush.
(1)
In the State of California it is required
by law (Section 4442 of the California
Public Resources Code) to equip a
spark arrester when a gas powered tool
is used in any forest covered, brush
covered, or grass covered unimproved
land. (MA5)
