17. Remove the power plug from the socket before opening the unit.
18. Remove all maintenance tools.
Before switching on the unit, check that all maintenance tools have been removed
from the unit.
19. Avoid unexpected operation.
Make sure that the power switch is turned off when inserting the plug into the socket
or connecting to power. DO NOT hold a soldering tool which is connected to a power
supply while touching the power switch.
20. Pay attention.
Be careful of what you do. Work with caution. DO NOT use the soldering tool it you
are not concentrating on your work.
21. Inspect the soldering tool for any damage.
Before further use of the soldering tool, safety devices or slightly damaged parts
must be carefully checked for error-free and intended operation. Inspect moving
parts for error-free operation and that they DO NOT bind, or whether any parts are
damaged. All parts must be properly mounted and all requirements fulfilled for guar-
anteed error-free operation of the soldering tool. Damaged safety devices and parts
must be repaired or replaced by a qualified technician.
22. Attention.
Use only accessories or attachments which are listed in the accessories list of the Op-
eration Manual. Use only WELLER
®
accessories or attachments on original
WELLER
®
equipment. Use of other tools and other accessories can lead to injury.
23. Repairs to your soldering tool should be carried out by qualified technician.
This soldering tool is in accordance with the relevant safety regulations. Repairs
should only be carried out by a qualified electrician using original WELLER
ment parts. Failure to do so can lead to accidents for the operator.
24. Do not work on electrically live parts.
The grip of antistatic designed soldering tools is conductive.
25. Applications with other WELLER
®
equipment.
If the soldering tool is to be used together with other WELLER
attachments, also observe the warning notices given in the corresponding Operation
Manual.
26. Observe the valid safety regulations for your workplace.
2. Description
2.1. Control Unit
The WSD161 and WSL2 microprocessor-controlled soldering stations are part of a
family of units that have been developed for industrial manufacturing as well as for
the rework and repair sector. The WSD161/WSL2 Soldering Systems offer digital mi-
croprocessor control as well as the use of a high-quality Platinum RTD (Resistance
Temperature Detector) type sensor to provide precise, responsive temperature con-
trol at the soldering tip. The soldering tools are automatically recognized by the
WSD161 / WSL2 Control Units and the corresponding control parameters are desig-
nated.
A digital readout, grounded soldering iron tip, zero power switching and antistatic de-
sign of the control unit and iron, complete the high quality standards established by
WELLER
®
. The WSD161 / WSL2 Soldering Systems also offer the capability of con-
necting an external calibration unit, which further increases the variety of functions of
the soldering systems. With the optional WCB1 Calibration unit, it is possible to initi-
ate a "Setback" feature (as well as an "Auto Off" function), a "Lockout" function, Fac-
tory Default settings, and a custom "Tip Offset" feature.
The temperature is adjustable in the range of 150°F and 850°F (50°C and 450°C) us-
ing the "UP" and "DOWN" Scroll Keys. The "SET" and the "READ" values are digital-
ly displayed. A blinking Red LED in the LSD (Least Significant Digit) signals that the
preset temperature has been reached. This serves as a visual indicator to monitor the
heater control.

WSP80: The WSP80 Soldering Pencil is characterized by its capacity for reaching
soldering temperatures quickly and precisely. Its slim design and power rat-
ing of 80W allows for use in applications from extremely fine to high-tem-
perature, high-mass soldering. Due to the extremely fast-heat up and recov-
ery time of the WSP80 Iron, soldering may be continued very quickly, once
the soldering tips are interchanged.
