MAINTENANCE
CASSETTE TAPES
Recording Protection
A recording can be protected from accidental erasure
by breaking out the plastic tab on the rear side of the
cassette (using a screwdriver or similar tool). If only one
side of a cassette is to be protected, break out the tab
on the right after having positioned the cassette so that
the blank side is facing you.

Precautions
lf a tape is played back several times in succession and
ed occasionally with a head eraser. Do not touch the
tape running surface of the heads directly with the
metallic part of the eraser but use the eraser after having
protected the heads with a piece of cloth or gauze.

especially if a thin tape (C-90 or C-120) is used, the tape
might be rewound too tightly on the reels, which causes
the tape speed to fluctuate. To avoid this, the cassette
should be tapped lightly against a table or other hard
surface to loosen the tape on the reels. On the other
hand, the tape should not be too loose. In particular,
after fast forwarding
or rewinding
a C-90 or C-120
cassette, the slack should be taken up by inserting a
pencil or other object into the spindle hole and tighten-
ing the tape.
4-Track Recording/Playback
After one side of the cassette has been recorded or
played back, remove the tape by pressing the eject but-
ton @9, turn the cassette over and re-load. The tape can
then be used again for the same recording time as the
first side.
Both Dolby NR systems work in a similar way. Neither
system functions to improve what is being recorded but
prevents the addition of noise to the recording by the
actual tape recording process. When material is record-
ed, the Dolby noise reduction circuit makes higher fre-
quencies
in the quiet passages
louder than
normal.
When the encoded tape is then played back using the
Dolby circuit, the frequencies, previously boosted, are
now lowered to their former level in the original program
maierial and, as a result, the noise added by the tape
recording process is reduced.
Dolby Type C NR achieves a higher degree of noise
reduction than Dolby B NR by boosting the low-level
higher frequencies and then lowering them again on
playback by a greater degree than Dolby B NR. In addi-
tion, the noise reduction effect extends about two oc-
taves lower so that the ultimate effect is subjectively
uniform across the audible spectrum.
Dolby C NR is
also characterized by two additional features, known as
spectral
skewing
and
anti-saturation.
Among
their
many
benefits,
they permit the high-level
high fre-
quencies to be recorded more accurately.
