3.2
The rope guide roller and Panic Stop brake mechanisms are mounted inside
the body of the rope grab, protecting them from damage.
3.3
The rope grab has been equipped with a safety lock lever to ensure that it
does not open in heavy use.
4
USE
4.1
Always locate the rope grab overhead to reduce the possibility of swing falls.
(Figure 4)
4.2
The rope grab should run with minimal manipulation on the lifeline when
properly installed on an approved rope.
4.3
The rope grab is equipped with a Panic Stop mechanism that activates should
the rope grab user grab it during a fall. The feature will allow the rope grab to
stop the fall on the lifeline.
4.4
Always ensure that the lifeline is not positioned in such a manner that it may
be entangled in machinery or vehicular traffic.
4.5
Calculate the fall distance to the nearest obstruction. Factor the stretch of the
lifeline into your calculation in addition to lanyard length, D-ring slide, shock
absorber deployment (if used) and movement of the rope grab on the lifeline.
If in doubt, consult with a Qualified Person.
Test the FP540 Series Rope Grab before each use in the following manner:
• Lift and lower the attachment eye. The rope grab should move smoothly
up and down the lifeline. Once complete, pull down on the lanyard sharply.
The rope grab must lock securely on the lifeline.
• Insert thumb through attachment eye and grasp rope grab body.
Squeezing inwards, pull down sharply on the rope grab. The rope grab
must lock securely on the lifeline.
• Should the FP540 Series Rope Grab not lock securely in either of these
tests, remove it from service immediately.

SERVICE LIFE
5.1
While the rope grab is designed to resist corrosion, severe environments,
which accelerate corrosion, may require that the rope grab be inspected more
often. Additional inspections will ensure that the integrity of the rope grab will
remain uncompromised.
5.2
Should an FP540 Series Rope Grab arrest a fall, it must be immediately
removed from service.
5.3
When the rope grab no longer closes on the lifeline easily, hesitates in travel
on the lifeline or shows signs of wear on the arresting cam, it must be
withdrawn from service.
5.4
If the spring in the Panic Stop mechanism no longer works, remove the rope
grab from service.

INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE
6.1
INSPECTION
6.1.1 Always test rope grab before each use as outlined in the WARNING following
item 4.5.
6.1.2 Inspect complete rope grab body and mechanism for corrosion, damage,
cracks, dents or bends. If any are present, remove the rope grab from service
immediately.
