5.4 Grounding

As PV modules have a parasitic capacitance to ground, in a system using
transformerless inverters, like this product, it is normal to have capacitive
leakage currents towards ground. The maximum allowable amount of these
currents is 300 mA. In order to ensure electrical safety, the maximum allowable
voltage on ground nodes is 50V, so the ground rod must have resistance less
50 [V ]
[ ]≤

PE
than 160
in case of a single inverter or resistance less than
n—0.3[ A ]
where "n" is the number of inverters.
It is admissible to connect the inverter and the support structures of the PV
modules to the same ground. If the modules and the inverter are part of a
building, it is obligatory to have a single ground for the building, the inverter and
the module support structures, in accordance with CEI 64-8. If the system is
created in the presence of loads able to inject huge currents to ground, like
welders, automatic facilities, large uninterruptible power supplies etc., the
ground rod has to be suitably sized.
In transformerless inverters, like this product, it is not permitted to ground any
point of the photovoltaic field. If the modules chosen require this connection,
it means that the inverter is not suitable for the application.
