6.7.2 Replacing the size D batteries
1.
Turn the catch on the battery holder to the "OPEN"
position and remove the battery holder from the tool.

7 Operation

7.1 Switching the tool on

Press the on/off button.
NOTE
After switching on, the tool begins the automatic leveling
procedure (the auto leveling indicator blinks). The laser
head begins to rotate and the beam is emitted as soon
as the automatic leveling procedure is complete (the auto
leveling indicator lights constantly).
7.2 Operation
NOTE
When using the PRA 380 remote control unit, switch the
tool on before switching the remote control unit on.
NOTE
The tool must be set up with its casing within ±5° of
horizontal in order to ensure trouble-free self-levelling.
DANGER
Never attempt to align the tool with the aid of the sight
while the tool is switched on.
1.
Set up the tool at a suitable location for the job, e.g.
on a tripod.
2.
Set up the tool in the required attitude and inclination
with the aid of the sight and then switch it on.
It then adjusts itself in the X and Y-axes. The green
LED blinks while the tool is adjusting itself.
The laser beam switches on and begins to rotate as
soon as the tool has adjusted itself correctly. The
green LED lights constantly.

Switch the laser receiver on by pressing the on/off
button.
4.
Use the laser receiver to check the height of the
laser beam - the beam has been located when a
constant signal is heard and the horizontal mark is
shown clearly in the display.
7.3 Working with the laser receiver
The PRA 38 laser receiver can be used at distances
(radiuses) of up to 200 m (650 ft). The laser beam is
indicated by visual and audible signals.
7.3.1 Using the laser receiver as a hand-held tool
1.
Press the on/off button.
2.
Hold the PRA 38 with the receiving window directly
in the plane of the rotating laser beam.
The laser beam is indicated visually and by an aud-
ible signal.

Remove the old batteries and insert new batteries.
Take care to ensure correct polarity (+ to +) and (-
to -).
3.
Insert the battery holder in the tool and turn the
catch to the "LOCK" position.
7.3.2 Working with the laser receiver in the PRA 80
receiver holder 11
1.
Open the catch on the PRA 80.
2.
Insert the PRA 38 laser receiver in the PRA 80 laser
receiver holder.
3.
Close the catch on the PRA 80.
4.
Switch the laser receiver on by pressing the on/off
button.
5.
Unscrew the clamping knob slightly.
6.
Secure the PRA 80 receiver holder on the telescopic
staff by tightening the clamping knob.
7.
Hold the PRA 38 with the receiving window directly
in the plane of the rotating laser beam.
The laser beam is indicated visually and by an aud-
ible signal.
7.3.3 Working with the PRA 81 height transfer
device 12
1.
Open the locking mechanism on the PRA 81.
2.
Insert the PRA 38 laser receiver in the PRA 81 height
transfer device.
3.
Close the locking mechanism on the PRA 81.
4.
Switch the laser receiver on by pressing the on/off
button.
5.
Hold the PRA 38 with the receiving window directly
in the plane of the rotating laser beam.
The laser beam is indicated visually and by an aud-
ible signal.
6.
Use the measuring tape to measure the desired
offset distance.
7.3.4 Menu options
Press the on/off button for two seconds when switching
on.
The menu is then shown in the display.
Use the "units" button to switch between metric and
imperial units.
Use the "volume" button to assign the higher-pitched
signal to the upper or lower area of the receiving window.
To save the settings, switch the PRA 38 off.
7.3.5 Setting the accuracy
The accuracy button can be used to adjust the PRA 38 to
one of three different accuracy settings: Fine: ±0.5 mm
(±0.02"); Standard: ±1.0 mm (±0.04"); Coarse: ±1.5 mm
(±0.06").
