TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

1.

DESCRIPTION

The Optilux Radiometer is an accessory
instrument intended to measure the visible light
output of a powered polymerisation activator
(visible curing unit).
2.

INTRODUCTION

Visible light cured dental restorative materials,
commonly called "composites" are hardened
only by light in the blue portion of the visible
spectrum (Figure 1). The wavelength range for
activation is 400 to 500 nanometers which
includes the blue spectrum and a portion of the
violet. Light outside this range, including the
ultraviolet (below 400 nanometers) and green,
yellow,
red,
and
infrared
(above
nanometers) does not cure composites. Many
curing lights used in dentistry emit energy
outside the curing range which contributes only
to heat or glare generated at the curing site.
The
Optilux
Radiometer
is
designed
measure only useful curing light energy and to
be insensitive to energy outside the useful
range.
3.

GLOSSARY AND ABBREVIATIONS

Visible light energy can be defined by two
parameters: The portion of the spectrum it is
comprised of (nm) and the quantity of energy
within that defined spectrum (mW).
