4.19 BACKLAPPING ___________________________________________________________
!
WARNING
To prev ent inj ury, k eep hands , feet, and clothing away
from rotating reels.
When the backlap switch is in the BACKLAP position, the
reels will turn without the operator in the seat.
Carbon Monox ide in exhaust fumes c an be fatal when
inhaled, nev er operate an engine wi
ventilation.
Check the r eel and bedk nife to determine if backlapping or
grinding will restore the cutting edge.
If wear or damage is bey ond the point where the c utting
edges c an be c orrected by the lapping proc ess, they mus t
be reground.
To Backlap:
1.
Adjust reel to bedk nife as des cribed in Sections 3.13
and 3.14.
2.
Obtain and engage the mechanics (backlap) key.

Make absolutely c ertain your feet an d c lothing are
far away from the reel.
b.
Make s ure the p arking brak e is Eng aged, reel
switch is Off, backlap switch is Off, and the traction
pedal is in Neutral.
c.
Start the engine, turn the mechanics key to Backlap
then engage the reel switch. If any of the reels turn,
adjust nut (A) to stop the reel.

Turn nut ( A) on the reel to be bac klapped s o the reel
turns in rev erse. A djust the reel speed to 100-150
RPM.

Reset reel motors to forward rot ation. If reel s peeds
vary, c heck nut ( A) to i nsure it is tur ned c ompletely to
full forward rotation.
5.
Remove and store the backlap key.
Apply lapping compound with a long handle brus h
to hi gh s pots fi rst then along ent ire length of the
reel.
Continue lappi ng and at th e s ame t ime mak e a
slight adjustment on the reel until there is a uniform
clearance along the full length of the cutting edges.
When the bl ades have been ev enly honed, turn
adjusting nut
(A) to ne utral. Carefull y and
thoroughly remove all lapping compound from reels
and bedk nife before running the reel in for ward
direction.
Disengage reel s witch and turn bac klap s witch to
Off.
