14. Troubleshooting

Review the information in the table below to solve operating problems.
PROBLEM
I. Optical Section:
LED operates, but field of view remains
dark.
The edge of the field of view is vignet-
ted or the brightness is asymmetric.
Dirt or dust is visible in the field of view. Dirt/dust on the specimen
Image looks double
Visibility is poor.
• Image is not good.
• Contrast is poor.
• Details are indistinct.
• Image glares
One side of the image is out of focus.
II. Mechanical Section:
The coarse focus knob is hard to turn.
The focus is unstable.
III. Electric section
The LED doesn't turn on.
The brightness is not enough
The light blinks
CAUSE
Power supply is unplugged.
Brightness is too low
The incident illuminator is not correctly
oriented.
The turret of the phase contrast con-
denser is in a wrong position
Dirt/dust on the eyepieces
Aperture diaphragm is stopped down
too far
The condenser is not well centered or
it is in a wrong height
Revolving nosepiece is in an incorrect
position
Aperture diaphragm is too closed or to
open
Dust or dirt on lenses (condenser, ob-
jectives, eyepieces and slide)
For transmitted light observation the
coverglass thickness must not exceed
0.17 mm
For phase contrast observation a
brightfield objective is used instead of
a phase contrast objective
Phase rings of objective and condens-
er are not well centered
Objective in use is not compatible with
condenser phase ring
Focus is not even
The nosepiece is not in the center of
the light path
The specimen is out of place (tilted)
The optical performance of the sample
cover glass is poor
The tension adjustment collar is too
tight
The tension adjustment collar is too
loose
No power supply
The brightness adjustment is low
The power cord is poorly connected

SOLUTION
Connect
Set brightness to a proper level
Change the angle of the incident illu-
minator
Move the turret to a click stop
Clean the specimen
Clean the eyepieces
Open aperture diaphragm
Set the condenser according to Koe-
hler settings
Move the nosepiece to a click stop
Adjust aperture diaphragm
Clean thoroughly
Use a coverglass with thickness 0,17
mm
Use a phase contrast objective
Operate on centering screws to obtain
a proper centering
Use a compatible objective
Slide holder is not flat. Move the speci-
men to a flat position
Turn the nosepiece to a click stop
Place the specimen flat on the stage.
Use a cover glass of better quality
Loosen the tension adjustment collar
Tighten the tension adjustment collar
Check the power cord connection
Adjust the brightness
Check the power cord
